Computer Question

I have viruses and adware shit that won't come off my computer. I'm sick of dealing w/ the shit so I am just going to reformat my hard drive and start over, but I have a couple of questions first.

1. Will the viruses and adware programs be gone?

2. What should I do before I reformat?

3. Do I just go to the Run prompt under Start and type C: format?

Thanks

Doc

A bit of a drastic decision

What kind of stuff you can't get rid of?

It won't let you format if you're under a Windows command prompt.

Make a bootable floppy disk, copy format.com from c:\windows\system32 to the floppy disk.

Once you boot, you should be able to run format c: ... then reinstall windows.

Please tell me you're kidding.

If you are not, I'd suggest getting help rebuilding the computer, because it is a lot more involved than that. You'll loose countless amounts of data, settings, preferences, applications, etc...

Try this first:

1. Go here first and download HiJackThis and CWShredder. Run them, but read the driections first so you don't make things worse.

2. Download, UPDATE, and run Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3

3. Download, UPDATE, and run Ad-aware 6.0

1) Yes

2) Nothing, if you're going to format.

3) If you want to but you don't have to. You'll need a bootable CD with an OS on it if you do and a computer that supports CD booting. (Most do now) If you are doing a windows XP install it has a format utility and a partition utility built into the install so you can just boot to the CD and do everything from there if you want.

Format c:\ isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes computers just get hosed and it's nice to start fresh.

Nope, I'm not kidding. As of right now, I have all the data that I want saved on a CD. I have a boot disk and all the drivers on CD. I don't have XP right now, so I'm running 98. All the info. I have on 98 states that it has CD-ROM support.

My reason for doing this is due to an error by a friend of mine while using my computer. Adware viruses are continually being installed on my computer. Spybot doesn't have all the updates to get rid of or find these files and Norton cannont delete them all.

I have manually removed many of them by booting up in Safe Mode. However, some are located in hidden folders that can be detected by Norton, but can be deleted OR found by myself.

I'm open to any suggestions because I really don't want to reformat, but I'm getting frustrated.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

Just get a copy of XP, stick it in the drive and hit fresh install. its that easy. (98 sucks anyways.)

Shadrach- HiJackThis seems like it's beyond my scope. I don't know what I should delete outside of BHO files. How do I go about understanding what all this means?

I did all that you said and I'm still getting popups. If I had a 12ga, my computer would be familiar with it by now.

ME is just as bad. My F.A.T. Table (I think that's what it's called) is messed up on mine. If I re-installed my discs (Windows) will that fix my problem too or do I have rto re-format my hard drive?

My wifes company is so busy recovering computers with this same problem we don' t have time to ride with you guys. Viruses and parasites, and those spybots have become so active and agressive that you are better off reformatting the HD. those things are written so well that they fragment them selves all over the regestry of your machine. you might spend hours searching the regestry of your machine, and still not get all the pieces out. If you miss just 1 piece, your machine will be hosed in a matter of the next time you hit the net. We have 3 puking computers on our bench now getting reformatted. Always back up everything that is dear to your heart, because at this point, if your puter is on the net, it will get sick and puke over and over again. Make sure your virus protection is up to date, and run ad-aware and spy bot programs as often as you can. This will give you some protection, but doesn't guarentee it. But I gotta be the here and say that buisness is good

you should format it or FDISK it.

It will be fresh, then get a firewall program install.

Damn I wanna ride again!!!!!!!!!!

A firewall isn't going to protect against spyware. Installing Spybot and Javacool's SpywareBlaster will help though. Run the full immunization on those programs and they will help protect against known ActiveX spyware.

Honestly, other than tracking cookies, I NEVER get spyware on my own computer. It's all about what you do while browsing online. Get a good pop-up blocked (like the Google Toolbar) and make sure you NEVER click on any buttons on ANY popup window or add that asks you stupid questions like "Whos'e this celebrity" or "CLick here to remove spyware". It's all BS. Always just click the [X] to close the window.

I guarantee I will be cleaning more computers today at work....Removing this crap off systems is becoming a full time gig.
