Cosby taking a stand...

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/07/01/cos....ap/index.html

Now I'm not sure I recall Bill Cosby being as 'political' (if that's the word to use) back in his days of acting. Or was I just missing something? I didn't hear his entire speech, but only going by what I read on CNN, he's got a point. Also if I'm remembering this...didn't Cosby buy the rights to "Little Rascles" and forbid it from being shown on the air any longer?

I read that speech this morning. Good for him!

I admire someone who tries to cleanup his own backyard like that.

If I said something like that, I'd be called a racist.

Holy shit! come to think of it, I haven't seen or heard of any Little Rascals episodes being aired in YEARS.

The last time I saw Little Rascals, it was on a tape recorded about 10 years ago. I hadn't seen the show since I was a kid. I was amazed at the things that were in a single episode to where I couldn't imagine it being aired today: This one mom was beating her kid with a hairbrush and Buckwheat was being bribed with a watermelon and was all-too excited about it. I remember thinking, "I can't imagine that they show THESE episoes anymore!"

Has anyone seen the show being aired lately?

Did you know that Mr. Cosby is also a Rhodes scholar? Very intelligent, very talented, a very interesting individual.

One of the funnier bits I've ever heard. Sage words. I wonder what the good Rev. Jackson REALLY thought about Bill's message?

Good for him and I'm sure many of us on both sides of the tracks/street/city thank him for being the someone to finally stand up and say it.

But after reading that article and getting to the quote from Jesse Jackson,

"Drunk people can't do that. Illiterate people can't do that."

I had to giggle because you know, what he actually said was

"Drunk peepo can't do that. Illitrat people can't do that."

(Go read the article to put that in perspective before you dog-pile me.)

I think the colloquial language used in Fat Albert was secondary to the messages in the show, which were about fairness, personal accountability and so forth. Attacks on him about that show are cheap shots in my opinion.

I wonder if Cosby's wife agrees he's "been pretty focused on being a good role model" ?

Everyone seems to forget the very humiliating and embarassing public revelation a few years ago about his long time affair with a young woman, and the CHILD HE HAD OUT OF WEDLOCK WITH HER!" And the continuing payments and hush money that didn't work.

Oops!

The shame is that the true message will be lost due to right wing whites using the soundbites to justify their own opinions. He didn't say it to get attaboys from the Rush Limbaugh sect, or to hear whites complain how it would be racist for them to say it. I think many of the attaboys are just a way for many whites to let their inner prejudices out.

Obviously he and "Reverend" Jesse Jackass have alot in common. I loved it when it came out he had a lovechild and was paying her 4 or 5 grand a month for support and to keep it quiet. ...This was after he was "assisting" Clinton through his marital infidelity. Ha, I can just imagine them laughing it up and discussing favorite positions while telling the media they were in deep spiritual talks.

I was primarily referring to comments about Cosby. Apparently the latest slam of Ryan wasn't enough to give up on the idea that politicians (or role models) have to be perfect.

Don't you feel the segment of the population Cosby was speaking of is a large part of the cause behind the prejudices you're referring to?

For example, bwa had a few black roommates living with him at his old apartment. I practically lived there I was over so much so I got a pretty good idea of how things worked over there. Where do I begin...they constantly invited people over that none of us knew without bothering to introduce them, coming and going as they pleased, one of them worked about 10 hours a week, the rest just smoked weed all day and didn't respect bwa's girlfriend's wishes for them not to smoke in the house, they were constantly on the phone, and it was always trying to pull teeth to get them to pay their share of the rent and the utilities, and I'm sure bwa will tell you that they still owe him money. Shit how could I forget, a few of them went to jail after beating up the pizza man with baseball bats because they didn't feel like paying for it.

They fit the exact stereotype Cosby is referring to, so I'm not gonna feel bad agreeing with what he has said.

I'm now patiently waiting for the people that think I'm racist and will say that could of happened with white roommates. I'm not, but almost the entire time they were living there I was thinking to myself "Gee I wonder how people become racist."
