BWA was just showing me these pics. They look like Cumulonimbus Mamatus clouds. Meaning thunderstorms just about to dump rain. The only thing is that I've never seen so many bunched up so tightly. This is very weird. I'm going to go to my west facing office window to see if I can see these clouds. I'm in the Loop right now, so I may not be able to view them... brb

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

You're right, Brian. I can't see them.

Okay, I checked my references, and they are Mamatus clouds. This is from the University of IL weather page:

Mammatus are pouch-like cloud structures and a rare example of clouds in sinking air.

Sometimes very ominous in appearance, mammatus clouds are harmless and do not mean that a tornado is about to form; a commonly held misconception. In fact, mammatus are usually seen after the worst of a thunderstorm has passed.

And the pic they show looks just like the ones you guys took. I wish I could see them.

Hey are you watching possible tornado in Mclean county, would a building just south of 70 and 55 be in danger?

Found this in the local Herald newspaper this morning!! They had a picture just like ours so I won't post another one.

Strange Procession in the Skies

At right: The sky over Will County turned eerie Tuesday afternoon as sagging, pouch-like clouds that looked like cows' udders or upside-down soup bowls moved in. They are known as mammatus clouds, and they are fairly rare in this area, said Casey Sullivan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville. "They're the only clouds that form from descending motion in the atmosphere," Sullivan said. Mammatus clouds are typically found on the undersides of very large thunderstorms known as supercells. A supercell moved southeast across Illinois on Tuesday, though the hail, high winds and heavy rains passed to the west and south of Will County.
