Question about body work

Ok guys I am wondering what purpose does the front fender/hugger (body directly over front wheel) serve? is it primarily just for looks?? because I am looking at my bike and I am really concidering taking off this peice and seeing how I like it But want to know the down side before I try this out.

If you ride w/ it off you will more than likely be replacing the radiator soon after. Rocks, gravel, bugs, and Harley parts will put dents in the fins on the radiator whereas the fender would help deflect these objects when you would run over them.

Doc's right,

that thing is there for a reason. Not to mention it looks kind of dumb without it.
