Citizenship Question

Ok ok ... a friend of mine *cough*, has a friend who is going to head here to Chicago from Canada to be together. Well she was wondering how long it takes to get Citizenship and if she can come soon and still get a work visa ? Can it be a " get up and go thing? " or what is involved? Any Immigration peeps out there ? We I mean , she wants to know ...

I'm in the process of getting a Green Card through my work visa. That shit takes about 4-5 years because of all the bureaucracy you have to go through.

If she gets married, her "husband" needs to file a I-129F form (petition for Alien Fiancee), plus other stuff.

See uscis.gov for details.

You have to be legally in the US for 5 yrs before you can apply for citizenship. During that time you can't leave the States for more than 30 days each year.
In the event of marriage, she gets her SS and employment authorization within 3 months than she may have to wait up till 2 years althogether to get green card.

Gregg,

I did the "lottery" thing in Canada. I'm not sure if they still do the lottery since 9/11. I went down to the American Embassy in Toronto, stood in line, they took my information, my number was pulled, then the paperwork took about 9 months, including background checks. I had to sign a document, it basically said I could not become "a ward of the state" for 3 years, which means NO unemployment and NO welfare. I had to show the INS officer that I could support myself for 3 years, ie he liked my healthy bank account They issued a resident alien card, then I got my social security card when I was here, and started my business, I should become an American Citizen by the end of this year. I could have become one 10 years ago, but I've been busy

Good Luck

Rick
