Is My Computer Hosed?!?!?!

Got a virus from my roomates PC last night. He wanted me to burn some of his MP3's to CD so I copied over his mp3 files and when I went to open that directory all @#$# broke loose!

My computer (Running XP professional) began prompting that I was about to download "wbkXXX.tmp (the XXX bwing random Hexidecimal values) over and over. I acknowledged this message by clicking "CANCEL" everytime it came up. Eventually the messages would stop for a moment, and I was able to browse that folder i downloaded. It contained odd files which seemed to be random files from my PC's hard drive with a Microsoft Outlook icon and invalid extension. When trying to delete these files it would attempt to open Outlook (which I DO NOT use).

At this point I realized I had a virus, so I imediately opened Adaptec to start backing up any files I needed saved. (such as digital camera pics, documents, projects, porn , etc...) My computer would no longer run CD Creator. It would not run Nero either. I couldn't run ANY burning software, and the "wbkXXX.tmp" messages were poppin up again. Now these odd files with the Outlook icon were finding there way all over my hard drive, and I'm getting worried cause I also cannot browse the network to transfer files onto my roomates computer to backup. I cant even run ANY applications. Eventually I began receiving Windows System file errors, and I knew i was FUBAR. I couldn't backup any of my shit and I knew if I rebooted the PC that XP would not even load anymore.

Whatever this virus was ate through my hard drive and destroyed my PC within 2 hours. I ususally backup my system and reformat my HD every couple months, but of course this was the time I didnt. I've lost tons of files, documents, my more recent digital camera pictures, SPORBIKES VIDEOS AND PICS!! SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I now get the blue screen of death upon rebooting my PC and can't even run XP in Safe Mode or off the CD. So I don't know of anyhthing I can do short of reformatting and reinstalling.

Does anybody know of a way I can retreive my "My Documents" folder before I do this??? I know there are some other PC guys here that know lots more than I do. Please help. I mostly want my Digital Camera pictures back.

Stupid @#$ing roomates. I am 90% sure this virus came off of KAZAA media downloader or WINMX, neither of which I run on MY pc, but I guess thats the downfall of having a home network with morons using it too.

you are going to need some face paint, some bongo drums, 12 pack of PBR, and 1 forty oz. of Old English.

Using face paint, paint face native american war paint style. Drink 12 pack and most of 40 oz. Pour remaining malt liquor out on the ground for your dead homies. Then get naked and do tribal dance around PC to the beating of the bongo drums. This should exercise the PC demons.

If this fails, format and reload.

Or you could always get a spare hard drive, format and reload on that. Then put antivirus software on the new load, and install old harddive as slave. Then boot windows from the new install and do best to salvage info from original harddrive. Make sure antivirus software is running.

Once you get a virus, it's TOO LATE to try to do backups!

Are you running in XP as a administrator? XP should not allow the system files to be infected by a virus unless you have administrator permissions or the permissions on your system folders are messed up.

Someone who's dealt with this thing before MIGHT be able to salvage some stuff. As Chris pointer out, one way would be to rebuild the OS on a new hard drive and attempt to recover stuff of your original drive after you get the system up. BE CAREFUL if you do this! You've been doing several thing wrong if you're running XP and a virus was able to do this much damage and you may just infect the newly built hard drive.

GET SOME VIRUS SOFTWARE!

Don't make me say I told you so!

The same administrative errors that allowed the first virus will allow another of the same virus if not corrected.

Don't make me say I told you so!

Thanks guys! I have some other things to try also. Some guys at work gave me some ideas.

No, I do not run ANY anti-virus software. I used to, but then started doing things on the PC that just started constantly conflicting with my antivirus software. I just never reinstalled it after that.

I have never cared that much, since if I ever got a virus I would just clean it or if necessary, reformat it, but I slacked off lately and havent been backing up all my data onto CD's like i used to, so I'm getting hit a little harder now. My own dumb fault.

I'd like to slap the nutsack who wrote this. It's obviously a worm virus like Melissa or similar, but modified to be malicious instead of just a pain in the ass.

I have all sorts of little e-mial viruses roamign around my computer and hackers attack me every so often, but my really slow 233 Pentium and Windows 98 seems to keep them away. I get at elast 3 or 4 messages a day that are contian computer viruses. I can jsut tell by the title. For example, one is titale try this, the subject reads: "try my new game, it's my first work, i'm sure you'll like it".

I always delete them.

Talking about Backups....

Does anyone have or can suggest backup software that uses the CDR drive? Also, I've been thinking of getting a DVD writer, but they're still a bit expensive. Comp USA is advertising a Memorex unit for $250, which of course my store doesn't have and I've never seen it there.

I've got a 20G tape drive, but I want to use it for backing up photos where I can just grab a disc and find photos for an order.

Any suggestions?

now .. maybe i put a bit too much faith in my virus software, but doing so has kept me virus free for a very long time.

don't get all pissed off at me about this, Dave. i accept the fact that you might know something i don't in this respect, but i'm gonna need more than a "Don't make me say I told you so!".

Don't you get pissed when I say I told you so!

I'm not sure what you read into my response, but you'll notice I said GET VIRUS SOFTWARE!

The administrative error I'm talking about is that with XP installed properly and running as a "normal" user (NOT administrator), a virus would never have been able to infect the system files or program files to begin with because the normal user wouldn't have write access to the executable files.

Actually, you are starting to seem like a pain in the ass!

There are any number of ways that EXEs and DLLs and better yet the system registry can be corrupt without being done by a virus. Setting up system security and permissions properly protects you from your own or other peoples' mistakes. When you want to install or upgrade software, you log in as administrator and knowingly take the extra care you need when running as administrator.

It's YOUR PC, do what you want. I really don't feel like debating about it. Maybe we can compare resumes sometime. I know THAT would be interesting!
