Just relax and breathe deep...

I guess people are making a big stink about this due to the chance of increasing underage drinking. I don't know if I agree with it, but here's the story.

New Machine Lets People Inhale Alcohol
Thursday, August 19, 2004

NEW YORK — It hasn't even arrived, and already some people want it banned.

A machine that combines alcohol and oxygen to create an inhalable alcoholic mist is set to debut in New York City this weekend, but Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano wants a local or state ban against it because he worries it will attract underage drinkers.

Spano said the Alcohol Without Liquid Machine (search) would harm efforts to drive down underage teen drinking and driving under the influence.

"This is really attractive to youngsters," Spano told the Journal News of Westchester in Thursday's editions.

"It's portable, and it will wind up at parties with kids. ... We don't want it in Westchester, and in fact, we don't want it in the state," Spano added.

Westchester has a chronic underage drinking problem, and recently enlisted the help of a Justice Department contractor, the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, to investigate the problem.

Over the past 18 months or so, teen drinking in Westchester has led to at least one party death, some spectacles of widespread drunkenness at school events and some police raids on home drinking parties.

The machine, created in England and already in use in other parts of the world, has users wear a mask and breathe in the alcoholic vapor. Promoters praise it for inducing a sense of well-being and say it doesn't lead to hangovers.

The machine is set to show up at the Trust Lounge (search) in Manhattan on Friday. Its American distributor is Spirit Partners, of North Carolina.

Kevin Morse of Spirit told the newspaper, "It's just a fun new way for adults to experience alcohol." He said the machines were being sold to bars and individuals, at a cost between $3,000 and $3,600.

"A lot of people haven't seen the machine yet and are acting off of a lot of rumors," he said.

No bars in Westchester have bought the machine, but Spano said his concern was that any venue offering it would have a difficult time keeping track of how much alcohol a customer is using.

Spano isn't the only elected official to be concerned about the machines. Suffolk County Legislator Jon Cooper had said last month he wanted to keep them out of that county, and that the county Legislature would be discussing it at upcoming meetings.

No hangover!?? Tell me more

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. There used to be an oxygen bar on Lincoln Ave. We went there a few times after the bars. They just give you a little nose plug mask thingy and let you chill while they pump sented O2 in ya.

I don't know what the reasons were, but I never made it out of that place without falling down on the first few tries for the door. Then we'd get outside and light up and fall down some more.

Who knew oxygen could be so entertaining?? I for one welcome the new technology, and hope I can run the machine from the AC adapter in my car.

Booyah!

Wow, just think, someday soon we might have to bail our sons or daughters out of jail for "underage breathing". Weird.

"It's portable, and it will wind up at parties with kids. ... "

Oh no! Portable alcohol!!!

"Spano said his concern was that any venue offering it would have a difficult time keeping track of how much alcohol a customer is using."

Ha! Keep track?

...and yeah, three thumbs up on the "no hangover" thing!

I'll bet we see a mysterious increase in the number of senior citizens with "oxygen" tanks too.

ohhh thanks for that post!

It'll wind up at parties with kids........ yeah, cuz they have $3,600 to blow on an vaporizer. Underagers have enough probs scrounging money to pick up a few 40's.... Anyway, on a side note, I think the idea is kind of cool. When I first read about this a few months back I thought that I could probably make one out of an asthma nebulizer ...3,600 my ass hehh

you know it sounds like a weird invention, but more so if the problem of ADULT choice, and as ADULTS with kids, WE NEED to govern there actions! not the ADULTS cause as ADULTS we make our choices good or bad and deal with them or pay for them, in a good sense or bad sense.

thats why i find it stupid they are like always trying to ban something, also too I DONT believe cars kill people, or bus's or guns, or what ever, its PEOPLE with BAD choices, wither or not they are DUI or not. it has no baring.

Just got back from Vegas. There were these machines that people had hooked up to their noses. Had 3 or 4 liquids bubbling and a hose going to the nose for inhalation. They were advertising Oxygen something. I just assumed it was an cool breeze Oxygen thing kinda like a Nebulizer (sp). Now reading this I very well could be wrong.
