There were 6 reported tornado touchdowns. Two were in McHenery. One was in Burlington, one in Sycamore, and two within 5 miles of DeKalb... pretty close to where we had our ride on Saturday.

Hey, Billyboy, you okay out there?

You bet I am. It doesn't look too good. We've got storms headed our way. I'm hoping they pass through quickly and the roads dry up. I'll start a new thread so folks can check it periodically throughout the day.

Tornado touches down, damage light

By MEGAN EDWARDS

[email protected]

with wire reports

McHENRY Vern Schiller was watching the Olympics in his living room about 7 p.m. Tuesday when he saw a tornado rip through his Shamrock Beef Cattle Farm on Draper Road.

The storm, which blew through McHenry and Kane counties Tuesday night, shattered his home's picture window and blew over 35-year-old trees in his front yard.

Winds swept away a metal building about 25 feet wide and 40 feet long, where farmworkers nurse ailing cattle.

Several storms ripped through Illinois on Tuesday, spawning funnel clouds in the northern parts while high winds downstate knocked out power and downed several trees.

The National Weather Service in Romeoville said three funnel clouds reportedly touched down in DeKalb County as a storm rolled through the area.

There were no reports of serious damage.

Schiller said he wasn't afraid when he saw a funnel cloud touch down at Legend Lakes Subdivision a few miles away from his farm.

It was minutes before he was watching the tornado touch down 20 feet from his front door.

"I stood there and defied it," Vern Schiller said. "If I had heard the house creak and shake, maybe then I would have gone to the basement."

His wife, Gean, scooped up the family pets and dashed for the basement as soon as she saw it, he said.

Three model homes in the subdivision had minor damages, McHenry Deputy Police Chief Gary Wigman said. One home's garage door was partly blown off. The other two had minor roof and siding damages, he said.

Police closed Draper and Ringwood Roads just as the storm blew through, Wigman said.

Police from Kane and McHenry counties said small trees had been blown over but no injuries or damage had been reported.

Downstate, in Madison County, thunderstorms knocked out power to about 11,600 Alton residents.

See STORMS, page 2A

Power was fully restored before 8 p.m., Ameren spokesman Erica Abbett told the Belleville News-Democrat.

The high winds also ripped the roof off a business and downed several trees.

Denise Osburn of Dow was working at the Payless Shoe Source in Alton when the storm hit.

"To me it sounded like a freight train going over," she said. "We all ran to the back and heard a loud noise that sounded like thunder. I turned to look out the window and saw part of our roof blowing away."
