check out venice beach during day/light hours... lots of a$$! at night, santa monica and the promenade... tourist spot. you could go to the theme parks... universal studios? or at least the city walk outside? sunset blvd... hustler store. also a indoor/outdoor club (or lounge) called miyagi's (sp?) on sunset. remember... if you're a smoker, it's not allowed inside clubs or bars.

San Fran

Bike Tennessee Valley around to the Pacific side - great view of the Pacific and old WWII installations

Hike Mount Tam - if it is a clear day, it is the best panoramic view of any city in the world. Fricken magnificient hike with a magnificient 360 view of Sausalito and San Fran.

Drink at Napa Valley - V. Sattui has a free wine tasting.

Cable car to Ghiradelli Square, Fisherman's Warf, and Union Square

Drive down Lomard street and other San Fran streets and get air going only 25 mph.

Drive down famous Highway 1 south along the coast as far as the want to go.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

I'm with WSE on this one. So. Cal sucks. San Fran, the Bay Area, and Napa Valley are awesome. That was my back-up vacation if things didn't pan out with Alaska.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Rent a bike. Take Hwy 1 from SF to Big Sur. Take your time. Walk a few beaches. Watch a sunset. You'll love it.

Hike Half Dome @ Yosemite National Park.
The ride into the park is awesome as well.

If you camp there,
Hopefully the bear will only sniff your tent, then walk away...
Like it did to me... Always a good thing to wake up to...

If it was later in the year I'd say to hit up Lake Tahoe for some skiing...

Ride Safe.

So did you decide where to go yet? I vote for San Diego but I'd always vote for San Diego when it comes to Californy!

Me personally would suggest a flight into SF and rent a car. Hit SF one day and drive down 1S to Santa Cruz. My old stomping grounds. Walk the beaches and DEFINITLY hit the Wharf and the Boardwalk. SO much fun! Then continue down to Capitola which is the next town over and have the BEST dinner at a place called "The Shadowbrook" Its address is right down the street from 1905 Wharf rd. Capitola Ca. You can take a little cable car down to the restaurant on the side of the hill. Awesome food, live piano and drinks by a huge firepit if you like. Not too expensive either.

Then car down to Monterrey and take the 17 mile drive (scenic) to the beaches and what not. Pebble beach. Then hit Caramel Ca for lunch at the Hogs Breathe. Best burgers and great shops too.

Cant go wrong i tell ya!

Lake Tahoe.

Summer in the mountains you can save a lot of $ b/c it's not skiing season. Great hiking 'round those parts.

Oh-- and flying into San Fran is the pits. Fly elsewhere and drive (Sacramento is my suggestion).
