Talking Your Leader Prevails!

My name is Vicki and I'm one of the nurses that has been taking care of Andy in the ICU since his accident. He asked me to post this message for him. He's off the ventilator and sedation now and in relatively good spirits (considering). I'll have to talk to Andy and get his permission first, but if it's OK with him I can update you guys on his condition. My e-mail address is [email protected]. Feel free to touch base w/ me if you need any information. Here's what Andy has to say...........

Hey guys. Wow, what a 20 days it has been. First, a big thanks to Vicki for writing this and scoping out the internet so I could see it too, in a way.

*We are ALL taking her someplace she wants to go for dinner, and acting like gentlemen about it too!

**And now to the story...WTF happened? What I gather into this: 954 is broken in half, I find myself living on the breathing machine for 2 weeks and finding out I have a cool fused new tail along with some not so lively legs.

Yep guys, this is a to the point story, I want to know what went down, how it happened and your thoughts.

So, tell me a story guys, tell me happy ones, sad ones, especially the WTF Happened ones. I think I will be able to check the internet maybe later this week when checking into rehab...in the meantime, tell me a story, and say thanks to Vicki.

Oooooh, look at the pretty colors

wow. Glad to see that name on the board again. I think Mike is going to have the best idea what happened. For the most part though we all came around the corner and saw the bike lying in the road. From what most of us gathered it looks like a lowside into the guardrail. Personally I know where you where until I pulled up on the sidewalk. Then I saw you on the sidewalk side of the guardrail. The guardrail had oil splattered all over it. After that Mike and I sat there and convinced you to lie still while Ken called 911. We went to Lake Forest Hospital to watch them airlift you and then we rode over to Lutheran General. We waited there quite a while before we found out there wasn't much we were going to be able to do and we weren't going to be able to see you. Hang in there buddy. We'll come see you as soon as you can have visitors.

Thanks Vikki.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vicki: Thanks!

Andy: Here is my 2 cents about what happened since you are wondering. You lowsided into the gaurdrail(that much is pretty obvious), but there was no debris or rocks or oil or anything that would have caused it. My best guess is that the front end washed out on you. I've seen you take tighter turns at higher speeds, so I've been assuming that it was tire traction failure. Regardless, it is so good to hear from you. The board hasn't been the same without your postings.

Well, this brightened my day after a vicious commute into work.

Andy, Northwest suburban lunches (you know, the ones you ate with us BEFORE you went on lunch ) just haven't been the same. We've been on a quest to find affordable, decent food. The quest continues..

Get well, Andy!

SWEET!!! He's back!

Thanks Vicki.

To Andy:

The rides have been boring as hell without you. So since I'm the only real witness, can I make up a really cool story or do you want the actual truth?

Alright here's what happened. I'll start from when we first turned on Sheridan road from the 4 way stop (not sure where that is). We start hauling a descent pace. Your're going a fairly moderate pace since it's night and hard to see the turns. We come up on a car, you make the pass, I follow. We take a coupel more turns and we pass a second car. We're still cruising along at a moderately fast clip, we've dropped the rest of the group, bt I'm thinking to myself that you'er not puching it as much as I woudl expect. I'm still keeping my distance. I'm about 100 feet behind you now, we come up to a slightly downhill right and i back off a little. As soon as I come around the bend I can see that the next lefthander look pretty tight, so I lift the throttle and lightly applying the brakes. You'er at he entrance of the turn. I remember seeing brake lights, then suddfenly the bike is on the ground, I hear metal scraping. It only slides a short distance before it slams in the guard rail, boucnes off and continues down the road. I' thinking "What the fuck!, why/how the hell did he do that...man this isn't good" Meanwhile I'm layign on the brkes to get stopped before the turn. I get the biek stopped and pull off the road 30 feet before the guardrail. Sit for a second to flash my brake lights in case there was a car or another rider rigth behind me. It's pitch black out and I have no idea where you are. I run down the road calling your name thinking that you bounced off the guardrail and slid with the bike. Finally one of the cars shows up and using it's headlights I can see you on the other side of the guard rail. That's all you want to know. You were basically in shock and being a pain in the ass.

From what I can figure out, you either had a brain fart, or you just went in too hot and outran the headlights. By the time you realized it was a sharp turn it was too late. Looks liek you tried to brake on the entrance to scrub off some speed but the bike got away from you and lowsided. We can talk about it more if you want whenever I see you. i wish there was a better explination or at least some kind of excuse. But what happened happened.

So how bad is the hospital food?

Vicki, Thank you very much for the update on Andy.

Dude it's great to finally hear from/about you. I haven't really been around for a while cause of my knee/work (changed hours @:30 to 10:30pm) and my mom in the hospital with cancer. but i still manage to check the board. If you need anything call me, you should still have my number or PM me and i'll get back to you.

much love we all have mad respect for you, see you soon.

PS no hogging up all the cute nurses

OMG!!! Vicki, Thank you soooo much for agreeing to help get the Rabbit back on the board. We all sure do miss him out there with us physically but we all know he's always out in the front of the group in our hearts and minds. Andy, what more can I say that hasn't already been said by the others. (OK I'll admit, my eyes welled up with tears of joy to hear that you're finally off the vent.) I knew that there was no way to keep a man with as much fight as you down. Stay strong, the road will get easier as time goes by. We're all here for ya if you need ANYTHING! As you can tell, we all look forward to seeing you soon. Of course they'll need to move ya to a MUCH larger room for that to happen. Oh and next time keep your clothes on will ya.( I got your coat back from the Fire Dept.)
