Oh crap! Job's on the line...

I will not be on the board today... Or yesterday, or the day before. I was in the process of installing a new Domain Controller/Exchange server on my network during the past week or so. I was in the process of moving mailboxes and public folders etc. Well, I had a hardware failure and I lost my old Domain Controller. Since Active Directory requires all Domain Controllers to be on the network in order to replicate, I cam stuck. I have an F'ed up domain. It's in limbo. So, I am sending my drive (won't spin, light up, of be recognized by BIOS) to New York to a data recovery company to hopefully replace some electronics and get an acurate image from. I hope to get the image onto another drive to drop back into my old server and continue where I left off last week. But in the meantime, I have to build an Exchange Server ASAP. I have until about 2 or 3 this afternoon to get mail flowing in and out. This also includes creating all of my users, groups and folders. Just wanted to give you a heads up so you didn't wonder where I was. If anyone's got a job open, let me know, I might be needing it soon.

I know things sound bleak as hell, but they shouldn't fire you for the need to complete such a DIFFICULT task in just a matter of a few hours.

Good luck.

Have after work fo sho!

Just remember in IT or telecom, its never your fault, there's always some acronym to blame it on and if that doesnt work, just blame it on microsoft, its always thier fault

If they are too cheap to buy the hardware for a separate server for two doamin controllers and a separate exchange server. Its their fault.

If you had recommended this too them, mgmt and they said no, too much money. Not my fault.

Did you try the... if you have a similar(exact) drive and swap the controller board on the hard drive. Its worth a try, unless you hear grinding noise and know its a physical problem.

If you have more than one DC.
Can't you force the role on a new server?
Only recommended in an emergency, in your case. the PDC emulator/ role master dies.

A server that big and critical shouldn't be running mirrored hard drives/partitions?

Windows NT supports RAID mirroring (Level 1 up to Level 5 disk striping with parity).

Here's a twist in the problem... I can't do anything with my domain because the DC that crashed was the golbal catalog. I can't promote the new DC to a global catalog because I can't replicate the servers across the domain. Since I can't start the other DC up, I'm kinda screwed. I can't move mailboxes, and I can't replicate the DC's. So, until I get the old box up, I'm out of options... Except send the drive away, (to which I'm hoping they just take the controller off and swap it with a known good one. I've done this a few times successfully. I don't have the time or resources to try this myself. That's why it's shipping out. If this is the only problem, I should be good to go, by setting up this new server with every user as an "internet email" user, and having them pull all their mail down, when the old box comes back up, I should be ok... I hope. I just want to keep my job.

hindsight. make multiple GC's
recommend hardware RAID controllers on all servers.

If thats too much money for them. Maybe you don't want to work there, to spare yourself the headache.

What kind of server do you have? what kind of drive is it?
maybe someone can help? should have posted earlier.

Single hard drive failures happen once every 1 to 2 months, on disks that are expected to last 11 years MTBF.

No single hdd is reliable enough to run on its own.

That's why fortunately, all our customers run RAID Level 1 in all system drives, for the servers we sell. Gotta cover your ass somehow.

Dual drive failures (both primary and mirror) are less common, and that's a catastrophic failure, happen once a year.

Man, good luck with that.

Brings back memories of being a LAN Administrator. All those days of my stomach being in a knot when things blew up. Hope that everything works out.
