Oprah car winners hit with hefty tax

OMG ... This is hilarious

Remember when Oprah gave away for free some Pontiac G6's to everyone in the audience?

Now read this

http://money.cnn.com/2004/09/22/news...ex.htm?cnn=yes

Nothing is ever free.

Nothing is ever free, but financing 7 grand against a $28,000 car shouldn't be too difficult.

$7,000 for a brand new car!

It's too funny... I bet more then half of the people who got a car didn't even think about the tax.

Ride smart... stupid hurts.

Everyone crashes. Some get back on. Some don't. Some can't...

Godspeed 788!!! We miss you!

Pontiac picked up the sales tax. What the article refers to is the fact that these "gifts" are considered "income" by the IRS, and therefore their value is taxable.

So, if they don't like it, they don't have to take the gift. I'm sure some will turn down the car.

I would sell it and have a nice little lump in my pocket to purchase something else. You know someone would buy it because it was the "Oprah car."

You'd think if these people could afford the $7,000 tax, they'd use that instead to buy a car instead of begging Oprah to give them one.

LOL, Finance the $7k. Sell the car for $28k. Make $21k profit. That's what I'd be dong anyways. That's a fair amount of money, and my current car is in good shape!

Ciao,

"The Harpo Spokeswomen said winners had three choices. They could keep the car and pay the tax, sell the car and pay the tax with the profits, or forfeit the car"

Gee...let me think. Keep the car and pay $7 for it, or sell it for just under sticker and buy a used car and keep the difference. Who would opt for the third choice?

It would so be on Ebay! Sell it, buy a cheap used car, and use the rest to help fund Mopar's drinking habit. I mean, that would buy at least a few weekends of whores and booze for Alex.

Nobody asked for a car, she just gave them away, to everyone.

Actually, they were selected from relatives writing in on how these people needed a new car.

I would totally sell it, and use the 20k difference as a down payment on better nice $15k car that meets all my needs, and put the other 10k for more education to get a better job ot actually solve my moeny problem...which is why Oprah gave them a car in the first place. Kind of like the whole proverb of "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day or teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime." The car only solves their problem for about 5-7 years... and acutally the insurance alone (if they chose to insure it) will cost as much as the POS car they were already driving.

Pontiac still gets the advertising (pretty cheap advertising really considering the viewership of the show).
