Agreed, he is lucky to have a dad to spring for tuition. Most of my friends had to hang themselves with student loans. In his defense, kids don't become thankful until their late 20's then they realize what brats they were

Rick, I'm really sorry to hear that. I would never have the balls to ask my parents for money so I could go to Jamaica on spring break. My parents told me if I wanted something to get a job and get it myself. So I did. Everything I have is because of work, nothing was given to me. My family wouldn't even help me with college.

Tell your kid if he wants to go to Jamaica to get a job and save some money. That's the only way he'll learn the value of the dollar and he will appreciate what you do for him much more.

Chris at this point, what really pisses me off, was he didn't ask me, because he knew the answer would be "NO!" I got him a job last summer with my connection in Pepper Construction making almost 13 an hour, he has his own money, I found this out balancing the accounts on-line, that the wifey had so thoughtfully given the money. Meanwhile I had a smoking deal going on a 2001 R6 this week, and I passed it up, because I know what would happen, I would keep the Fizzer, buy a trailer, and all the associated crap, to do track days, which for me is like mainlining herion, so I passed on this cherry R6, because I'm a fiscally responsible adult, I'm so pissed, I have a CC with a 25G limit and the motorcycle show is this weekend, and I'm pissed........guess what's going to happen

4 words...stop payment, student loan!!

So does this mean we're checking out the new VFR tonight????

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

I would be grateful you could do such a great thing for your son.

Then I would send him a bill for the extra $1000.00, a student loan if you will.

If Diane would let me, I would do it in a heartbeat. And the he doesn't "feel the need" to work this summer, he wants "to relax and enjoy his summer" I swear to God I'm going to take out back and beat him. College life for me was the time of my life, I had a blast, what the hell does he need to relax for?

Ahhh.... the old "mom is easier and will say yes, so I'll just go straight to her and avoid dad" trick. I remember my brother's and sister doing that. I don't blame you for being pissed, that was pretty chicken-shit of him.

On the bright side, I'm glad to see that you're going to go have some fun at the Show. I hope to see your technicolor self out at the track this year. Just remember, don't get pissed when you see a green bike passing you.

Rick.....How selfish can you be? This is your son for goodness sakes! Give him a break! He is still learning the ropes! Hey school is tough enough without the old man breathing down your neck! He deserves a vacation! Send him to Jamaica! He probably needs it......

Yeah thats what you wanted to hear huh?

Tell him to make a choice. If he can make adult decisions than "ALLOW" him to take on the adult responsibilities! Tough love is what my parents told me.
Then again i was out of the house and COMPLETELY on my own at 18. Everything turned out roses! if i needed money for the weekend i sacrificed shit during the week. If i needed more i got a part time job and managed. Not once did i EVER call Mon & Dad for money. I WANTED TO DO EVERYTHING ON MY OWN TO PROVE TO myself I COULD!

Good luck mr. Deep Pockets!

i would say this is something you absolutely need to do. talk it over with your wife and make sure you are on the same page on stuff like this from now on. You both have to be asked for a decision like this to be final. Tell your wife that his "free ride" ends here. You will continue to pay for school but Jamaica is the last piece of the pie he gets. From here on out he is moving to adulthood and without the proper preparation, HE IS FUCKED FISCALLY and will always mooch off mommy and daddy.... or should i say just mommy.

You have to say thats it and draw a line in the sand. he needs to go to school, keep a job in the summer and pay for shit like this on his own. You will be putting yourself in for a world of stress with your wife if you let this continue. You will start to resent everyone.

Okay, I was the same as a few of the other members. I was out of the house early and was paying for everything on my own. I am so in debt to school loans I'll be dead before I pay them off, but I love my parents for doing it. I can make it on my own anywhere. I worked 40 hours a week and overloaded every semester in Engineering. There is no reason he can't have a job for at least his own spending money. I worked at BK for 3 years while at school, it paid all the bills including rent becuase I didn't stay in the dorms longs and paid for several spring breaks and a trip to Spain.

But... some people can't do all of that and still get good grades, my sister only went to school, she did not work, but still knows the value of a dollar. My parents gave her a monthly amount of money and when it was gone, it was gone. She is the tightest person with money and is the best bargin shopper.

At the very least if I had asked either of my parents for that amount of money I would have had to beg and plead for about a month and then I would have only gotten half of it with a payment plan to follow!

I don't have aby kids so maybe my opinion will change when I do, but this is what I think. If I have the money to give my kids a better life than I had I'd do it. Jamaica, sure I think thats reasonable because of the whole college/springbreak thing, figure it's the last vacation you will ever pay for for him. But the summer off, tell him to get fucked, when I was 18-22 I could live happily with 1 day off a week from work. Time moved a lot slower back then.
