Chatterbox Question

I know this question was asked and answered when the group buy was going onbut I dont recall the answer.

I have the FRS X2. Is there any two way radio or CB or anything else thats compatible with this chatterbox ? Something that somebody in a car can use short of buying another Chatterbox?

I forget who, but there were some folks that didn't go in on the group buy because they had Talkabout radios. They just got a vox headset to use with their radio and it worked fine with our chatterboxes on the group rides.

I was one of those that bought the Talkabouts. Yes they are compatible, you k=just need to turn off the privacy setting which allows only Talkabouts to use a certain channel. The vox doesn;t work well with any motorccyle system above 40mph.

I bought a flexible earbud and boom mic that was PTT (push to talk and ran it down to the radio which I strapped to my left handlebar. I just push the PTT button on the radio with my thumb just like my turn signal. It works well at about 1/3 the cost. You can buy the real nice 5 mile Talkabouts now for ~$100, $20 for the holster, $20 for boom mic and be set. Or you can get a cheaper Talkabout ~$50 with the same accessories.

Slightly off-topic , but still concerning the Chatterbox FRS X2....I bought the X2 last year and while at Laguna Seca this summer I spoke with a Chatterbox rep and she had the newest model on display. She said Chatterbox had improved the sensitivity of the microphone so as to not be so suseptable to wind noise. She said to call Chatterbox if you have the older X2and ask them about sending in my unit for modification and a new cord for a $30 charge. Beats buying a new model, I guess .

Just thoguht some of you would like to know this in case you've found your FRS X2 to be too touchy while riding. I know mine is a bit hard to dial in.

so did you send yours in ?

I dont think its the sensitivity but just the wind noise itself that makes a damn near impossible to hear or be heard. Im not sure what any type of upgrade would do. But, what the hell. Its only money. If they say it works Ill try anything once

No, I'm really lazy when it comes to stuff like that. I also never even use it. I bought it with the intention that my friend was going to buy one too, but now I'm the only one around with one. The only use I did get out of it was on a trip to Deal's Gap with the girlfriend. We did a lot of two-up riding and it came in handy with the extra earpieces and cord.

The sensitivity comes into play with the VOX. I either had to yell to get it to automatically turn on, or the wind would set it off. At sustained speeds it is probably ok, but in stop and go situations, I noticied it being finicky.

I know what you mean about talking to the rep. I ran into one of those fuckers at the chicago bike show. I thouroughly described my disgust with a unit which not only has terrible audio quality, but is useless above 50mph. He then reassured my how their new design is way better and i should get the new headsets. Of course, they wanted money for the "upgrade". They put out an piece of shit on the market and then expect people to buy an upgrade. Who do they think they are, Microsoft? I sold my X2 on ebay.

I liked Kruz's setup. He sounded pretty nice on that talkabout. all the X2's sounded tinny and distorted. I really think chatterbox screwed up when they put that baby on the market.

PS I got $150 for mine on ebay. If you have a unit and hate it, like i did mine, you'll get most of your money back on ebay if it's in good condition. Luckily, i had the box, manual, etc. Heck, people were asking me to close my auction and sell early. I was happy to oblige....

are you sure it was an X2 problem and not your helmet? I've got none of the problems with mine that you mentioned. There was some microphone noise initially, but that was remedied by moving the mic farther up inside my RF900.

I've been more than happy with mine...now if I could just get some of the rest of you to occasionally put it on your helmet during some of our group rides...

Ernie,

That thing really sounded horrible. I could not hear above 50-60 mph. Lest you forget, a number of people had problem with those POS's right out of the box. I have no forgiveness for companies that choose to let their customers be the QC department. I have have no doubts that some units probably work well. The newest versions of those are probably ok. All i know is i felt i got screwed bigtime by that product. I considered it relatively useless, except for piping music into on long trips. I'm glad you and some others have had good luck. I didn't. Either way, doesn't matter these days. I would look pretty silly wearing my Arai on my Trek . I have a portable MP3 CD player to keep some cool tunes going while i'm two-wheeling...

Well, apparently Chatterbox felt there was aproblem because they redid their mic system and will do the upgrades for unsatisfied customers.

Just because we have been on the subject, I re-mounted my FRSX2 tonight on the helmets and headed to Strats. I pushed the mic further up than it had been. At speed around town or under say 50mph, things were fine. Once out on the expessway around 60-70+, it was almost unuseable. In order to keep the VOX from turning on automatically, I set it so high that I had to scream for it to be voice activated. Mostly, I think it is from the noise the bike creates rather than wind noise. Someone with stock exhaust may not have the trouble I have. Someone on a goldwing with a big windscreen may have much better luck too.

All in all, I'm glad I have it, but it does have it's shortcomings.
