Not sure if it is any good, but College of DuPage has a Bartending class. www.cod.edu should have some info.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

good luck man. I've had quite a few friends try to get into the bartending business. From what I hear you have to know someone who owns a bar in order to get a job, unless you have breasts......

My name is JB, people call me JB

I took the COD course about 10 years ago. Its a great start even if you only want to know about more cool drinks to suck down.

Still the only place you'll really learn is on the job.

try to learn from friends, then lie your way into a restaurant bartending gig. Tell them you worked at some Country Club in another state. Learn a little about wine first(that'll help in a restaurant), restaurants have slower bars so it's easier to start there. Get you feet wet and if you like it try to get a bar gig.

+1 A few (guy) friends of mine never found a bartending job. A girl friend of mine has gotten 2 back-to-back no problems. Breasts=jobs

I have worked with a few certified bartenders and they all needed to be retrained. The best thing is go to a TGIF applebees or a place like that they will train you and you will be able to deal with volume.

Good luck

Screw the schools they are a waste of time and money. Find a corporate place that is opening a new store, I.E. TGIF, Applebees, Chilis(The shithole i bartend at...) and apply for a bartending possition. by the way your talking about making shit for cash, well bartenders and serving staff normally get paid 3.90 an hour, and they just raised that too! Its all on personality. You gotta make the tips. But the best advice is get into a store that is just opening up, stores that have been open for awhile dont normally hire unexperienced people for bartenders. There are plenty of their servers that would like to move up to bartending that there isnt a point for it. I was a server at my Chilis for a little over 2 years before they made me a bartender (I was also underage for a little over a 1 there too). If you have to go that route, so them that your a kick ass server and hope for the best.
Good luck!

I have worked in restaurants FOREVER and bartenders/servers make a killing. Decent restaurants with an average two person check of $40, your walking after a 6 hour shift with $150+. I have yet to meet a full time server at any of the restaurants that I have worked that has not made $40K+.

I agree with you on starting with the bullshit corporate places first thought, much easier to get a job. You absolutely need to know someone for an upscale bartending gig though, these jobs can pay you six figures easily.
