Motorcycling Heroes

If you could spend the day with anyone, living or dead, whom you think is a legend in the industry, sport, or lifestyle of motorcycling, who would it be?

"For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard..."

The first turn is the worst turn, between the left ear and the right one.

Yes I mean Hunter S Thomson! and yes, he was a writer like no other. He wrote the best 9-11 reaction the day after it happened. And yea Wild is an understatement for that guy.

You mean Hunter S. Thompson. Yes, I'm sure it would be wild. He was "allowed" to ride and party with the 81's for a while until his mouth got him in trouble at which point he was lovingly beaten and sent on his way. His book, "Hells Angels" is, as I understand, a fun read. I also understand the acuracy leaves a bit to be desired.

Hmm ... I had a Roger DeCoster BMX frame when I was into that sort of thing.

I would not mind riding with MJ for a day.

Indian Larry was the first builder of "power cruisers". Choppers meant to be ridden hard and fast. He was the kind of bike builder from whom I'd like to learn about bike building.

Daijiro was most definitely a great rider. Fonzi seems like he's on that path but I'd have to go for Rolfo, Depuniet, or West. That kid needs to be on a factory ride!

I met DuHamel after the first Big Kahuna double header at Road Atlanta in 1998. He was all business before the races, to the point of maybe being rude. I guess I can understand that considering it's his livelihood. After the first race, when he stuffed Gobert coming down the hill, he would have talked to people all night. After the second race, when Gobert took him by several seconds, he was pretty somber and short. He was not, I'm glad to say, rude. Obviously he doesn't like to lose.

I did get to hang out with my homeboy, Thomas Wilson, Jr., that day. Tommy lives in a Toledo suburb and, at the time rode the VR 1000 for H-D. You might remember that he was lifeflighted from Loudon that year. The same year Miguel almost lost his leg at Loudon.
