Chicago Radio .... WTF?

WTF is going on? What is wrong with Chicago Radio stations? Every time I leave this market, I am greeted with a bunch of radio stations that are to my liking. (St Louis, Milwaukee, Indianapolis etc.)

Q101 and their new format .....sucks
94.7 somewhat sucks but, now are going wall to wall with SOX Games???
99.9/92.5/92.7 is too random
96.3/103.5 play the same songs over and over
107.5 is too R&B most of the time
100.3/101.9 potentially plays stuff that will put me to sleep
not to mention all of the other lame radio stations

When I am listening to radio, I want to be compelled to start break dancing, or go 150mph's, or bang my head through the window. I am not getting that, and therefore do not get "IT". I started listening to talk radio years ago, because I hate constantly changing channels, and I spent some time with Sirius, and was also unimpressed.

Why do Chicagoans get screwed with lame radio choices?

I heard this PHONKY station today, riding back home through Michigan. It was playing classic rock, r&B, pop, funk, country, but, no gospel or contemporary christian. With those two exceptions, it was almost like listening to the BBC.

I'm with you on this. Chicago stations are going downhill fast. Even AM is starting to blow. A few years back favorite stations were The Zone and Q101 and now they both suck ass.

Q101 is way better now, imo. It beats that flavor of the month/10 songs in rotation crap catered to the MTV demographic they had before. Did they have a 1 Beastie Boy song per hour quota or something before? I absolutely hated their old format.

That said, I listen primarily to ESPN and the Score AM stations but like what I've heard of Q101's new format way better than before. And I'm a damned picky bastard music snob too. (but at least I can admit it) There's really no music I like from the last few years played on Q101. Example the other day: Elastica: Connection, Nirvana: Drain You, Violent Femmes: Add It Up, Cure: Just Like Heaven, and Metallica: Master Of Puppets sitting in my car during lunch. I remember the songs because I told a coworker when I got back in like it was some huge deal.

I've rarely willingly kept a radio station on for more than 2 songs in a row before. I have a 106 total mile commute every day and since they changed formats, there's way more for me worth listening to whenever I check Q101 than I ever found before.

Anyway, what's this about 94.7 changing too? Bring back The Blaze and Z-Rock! Even Rock 103.5 was alright.

They're never going to please every single person with a public radio station. Thank God for CD burners.

Get a head unit that plays MP3's. approx 180 songs on a disck (@128kbps which still sounds very good on a high end car system). Use rewriteables and you can change teh content whenever you want or get new CD's. Hell theres a few 6 and 10 disc changers out that can play mp3 discs. I tried satelitte for 2 yrs. Probably listened to it once a month. Its not worth what they (either XM or Sirius) want per month IMO. $5 or 6/month maybe, but not $13.

I have no idea what compelled 94.7 to broadcast Sox games, it's a music station. Anybody that wants to listen to sports can flip to AM.

XM all the way ! I can think of too many things that I waste 10 dollars on each month, so $10.00 for bad ass selection and the ability to save songs to my Delphi is all so worth it!!

I listen to talk radio sometimes and CD's. I refuse to pay 10.00 a month to listen to a radio when I have CD's and my wife has a MP3. We listen to US99, but now they have NASCAR and like 94.7 it's a music station.

Videos killed the radio star

Sorry about the experiences. Chi radio has a market to hold on to and they'll play to whoever complains the loudest and/or whatever "trend" is in.

I'm old skool and though I love my classic rock I don't usually do the R&B/Hip-Hop stuff or anything else. Because to me they sound the same.

Again, I'm old skool so give me my 102.7FM V103 baby! I know what I'm about to get and they don't drift. So if it's that bad for ya, I recommend like everyone (and even I do it) get the cd's and/or some MP3 or if ya want to pay a monthly fee to drive around and listen to satellite stuff, kool too. I'm content with the one station and when they're playing something I don't feel like listening to, I switch to that one station that's always going to play the hits - CD.

How's 96.7 these days? They are a Joliet station that I'd listen to in the car (before I got a car with a CD player).

Yeah, like I said. They changed their format from 80's 90's 00's rock to easy listening They were never on that much, because you have to be south of 88 to get good reception.

I get the fact that there are alternatives sat,cd,mp3 etc. but it blows me away that seemingly smaller markets have better stations.

Here's what ya do. Get yourself an Ipod or some other mass media player. Load all the music you want on it. (20 gigs on an Ipod is like over a week of solid music). Then plug the Ipod up to your radio. Viola, all the music commercial free.

Good point. The stations I use to listen to have become so crappy, that I have gone back to listening to XRT. That station is a decent failsafe.
