My mom has an 02 CL type S.

I love that car, the only trouble she's had is dinging the rims at tollbooths

These cars do have a widespread transmission issue - BUT I've heard if you purchase one as certified pre-owned, they have a longer transmission warranty (like 100k miles?) because Acura knows about the issue.

I'm thinking of picking up one of these cars after my lease is up next March - hopefully I can find one that has had the trans swap already.

Yeah, Honda has problems with some of the auto transmissions. It's not as widespread as some would have you believe, but it happens. I know they extended the warranty for the trans to 100K on some cars, but I'm not sure which ones/years. My family's had a couple of the affected years and so far no tranny probs (knock on wood).

I use to have a 2002 Acura CL-S, basically the coup version of the TL-S. The tranny died at around 35K miles. Acura replaced it and upped the warranty to 100K miles. Besides the tranny issue, the car was not built too well. After two years, things were rattling and coming loose. Of course the dealer said it was normal. I sold it shortly there after.

A friend at work replaced the tranny in his 02 TL-S at 40k miles. Acura was very good about covering it all under warranty and giving him a loaner car. Except for the tranny, nothing else has gone bad with the car and he is happy with the way Acura handled it.
