Motorcyclist helmet study.

Anyone read the article on helmets in the June 05' edition of Motorcyclist magazine?
It raised some great questions of the snell rating on helmets. The test they run (snell), which occurs less than 5% in hundreds of actual motorcycle crashes, produces a helmet that is to stiff for your own good. The best helmet they say for greater than 95% of all motorcycle crashes... an $89.00 D.O.T. only Z1R zrp-1 (or Z1R Strike). I highly suggest this read. There is much more info than I can put in so many words^.

I just read the same article and agree, Great article. It's what I thought all along. High end helmets are nice, but any DOT helmet, or any helmet for that matter, will help protect your head in an accident. The article said that when looking at motorcycle deaths, that head trauma was only part of the cause of death. Usually there are multiple injuries along with head trauma that add up to the death. Not just the head trauma itself.

There was a snell rebutal to that article. Basically the article focused on a very small area of helmet function. Snell doesnt deny that the $100 snell helmet protects just as well as a $500 snell helmet. But there are alot more issues at hand here. Personally, I think Id get a euro certified helmet (eec or something) if given the choice though. It has the most restrictive standard of all.

Alex,

The article just came out in the magazine. It won't be online for a while. I'd scan the article, but it's about 6 pages long. You'll have to go buy the June Motorcyclist magazine.
