What internet provider do you have at home?

……and how much do you pay per month?

Would you recommend it?

Earthlink DSL, $49.95 or $49.99 -- I don't pay the bill really, so I'm not sure.

When it's running smoothly, which is most of the time now, it's great. It was kind of a bitch to get them to figure out what was disrupting our signal though and that seriously made it suck for several week-long periods of time.

SBC Yahoo DSL and they have a deal right now for $29 a month. (That's your price, as an employee I pay the same price, $29.)

The customized Yahoo portal that they give you is really cool.

If you have more that one PC, they also have a deal with 2wire where you can get a good price on either a wired network in your home or a wireless if you have a laptop.

If you or anyone is interested, I can have one of my folks give you a call to get you the best prices. Drop me an email at the address below.

Western Communications Cable. #39.90 per month, includes $9.90 for cable modem "rental". I know you can buy cable modems now, I wonder if I can get out of that 9.90 per month by buying my own ?

Do the other people with cable have to "rent" a modem from their provider ?

www.Speakeasy.net SDSL $80'ish a mo

It's hard wired into my house, which means I do NOT have to deal with having crappy Ameritech as a phone provider.

It's roughly about the same costs as a phone line and DSL, so don't freak out about the monthly $$$. So cost wise it is about equal to what we were paying prior.

Runs smooth as silk, has never been down, and always chugs. I had it up and runnin within 5 days of placing my order. Where everyone else, ATT, Americrap couldn't come through on a guarentee on servise.

Champ has DLS.com believe.(that isnt the right web addy) Not sure how much he pays a month, but it is a wireless system. His signal transponds from the top of his house to a dish by the local airport. Every time I've been over its run very well. He can give you more specifics!

I'm still on dinosaur dial-up, but I have Core Comm, which used to be Megsinet. It used to be $9.95 a month, but I switched my phone service to Core Comm and now my internet service is free with none of those banners or other compromises you must make with typical "free" or cheap things.

I'd love to get into cable, dsl, or whatever is fast these days, but I'm not sure much is offered here or what is a good route to go. Thanks for starting this thread, Vivid1, I may learn something too.

What would you have called the download speed when it was @home? a turbo busa on I-55? I may still have a screenshot of D/l at over 740KB which =about 6megabits/sec. It was unreal. Now the dl is capped, but still ok. A little more expensive than what @home was for less bandwidth.

Ouch, "Americrap"? If there is something we can fix for you that we didn't do right, let me know and I will get it taken care of right away. Ameritech is the ONLY phone company that is local, employs your friends and neighbors, and isn't hiding behind goverment imposed subsidies to create "competition". Regardless who provides your telephone service, it's Ameritech out there providing a phone network with 5 9's reliability.

What if your company was foced by the government to sell your products / services for half of what they cost you to make?

Ameritech isn't perfect, no one is, but honestly think about the last time you picked up an Ameritech phone and didn't have dial tone? Is your PC that reliable? Is anything you own that reliable?

Damn Ron, I didn't know you worked for Ameritech. Well, basically they put me through the rinnger on DSL....made me jump hoops, made false promises kept me hanging then told me sorry, can't give you the service.

Now I KNOW that I'm still running through their lines/junctions and what not, so I don't know why they wouldn't/couldn't do it at the time.

Basically, we started out with two phone lines and two dial ups in my house with them. They jerked us around on some bills and weren't real responsive to taking care of it. My bigest greivance was the callpack 100. Was explained to me as 100 calls, non LD for $10, regardless of length. Now, I could live if it was anything within a certain mileage radius, but they looked at it as anything outside 7 miles, and out of area code. Well, Crystal Lake is 2 miles away and is 815, not 847. So they treated all calls out side of area as LD. Now Champ lives 7 miles away, and they said he didn't qualify. WTF?

Basically, just never felt like they could give me a good explanation for why there were all these "Special circumstances" as one CR put it. So off they went.

At some point in time I may give them another try. But not today unfortunately.

Lupi

I have Americrap for my local service. Never had a problem with them for this. The reason I dislike them so is for almost 10 years I have been trying to get DSL. 7 years at the old house, 1 year in the transition house and 1 year here. They take the order and dont follow thru, call back, nothing. Your put on perverbile "Hold and Forget" when you call. I event went to SBC to get things done. At the old house, had my neighbors who had DSL but I couldn't get it. Move into this new house place the order and again "Yes Mr. Lupori you qualify. Here is your order # and we will be out on Sept 18 to install it." I take time off and no one shows up. And I couldn't get thru to find out why. Get the run around and all next day. They say no order was placed. The order number I had was not theirs.

So I went back to dial up. Grrrrrr Way slow. Then I found DLS.net a wireless IPS out of Crystal Lake. Its $65 a month, but I have no choice unless I want Dial UP or Satellite which costs the same is slower and has a higher equipment cost.

Ok enough rant.

Ciao,

No sweat, and I agree that the local long distance rules are confusing. I work there and I don't always get it. The problem is basicially that the phone company central office (CO) location, which sets the 'rule' for what is local long distance, can't move with your phone call. So your call to your buddy may be closer to you than the CO, but the call has to travel all the way to the CO and then back out to your buddy. What makes this even worse is that most people don't even know where the CO is that serves them.

Bottom line, I can get shit done at Ameritech and would appreciate it if you would give us another chance. You will notice a difference. Whenever you're ready, just drop me a line.

We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.

Funny thing about CO's

When I lived in Round Lake, I was 8000 ft from the nearest CO. Great and that CO was equiped for DSL so I was told. But for some dumb reason, my house was routed to a CO in Grayslake at about 16000 ft or so and it was not equipped. That, I was told, is why everybody and their brother would say I qualify for DSL and they would take the order. 1-2 months later they would cancel the order stating DSL was not available. Down side is it took several years b4 I was told where I was routed.
