HELP ME, with trying to open a CDrom that was a CD-R

a friend of mine took some pics and gave me a copy of it on CD, which he bruned with a CDR, well i cant seem to open it, its works on his computer but not mine, we both have real player for the videos and MGI photosuite 8.1 and i still cant open it, weird thing is he gave me 1 a long time ago too and well it works, this one wont spin in the drive, i cant open it threw hitting my computer then picking the cr drive to open, or even going threw the MGI to get pics on the cd and no matter which way i try i cant get the cd to atleast be read...everytime i hit the CD rom button, it says it is not ready, when i read the propertys of the CD in the CD rom, it says, 0% is used or tooken, meaning that 1 the cd is blank, or 2 theres nothing in there.

i cant figure it out, and i know it works cause on his computer it did, and i got an other CDR disk that i can view but not this 1,,,any one knows whats up?

Sounds like your friend made a mistake burning the CD. Usually when you toast a cookie (mess the CD burn up) it won't even spin up. If you can't even get your computer to recognize that is has a disk in the drive that's more than likely the case. Have him burn ya another one

hell right now i am playing a music cr that he burned for me and its works fine, just not this other one with pics and videos on it.

Sometimes computers don't like it when you try to get them to recognize a CD full of porn (kidding)...

Honestly though I think he's trying to burn them in the wrong format (i.e. photoCD). There are a bunch of different formats you can burn CDs in... and a few of them don't like computers (i.e. the photoCD format which is meant to be played in DVD players and such). Have him burn a REGULAR (ISO9600) cd with the files on it. That should work.

What program is he burning with?

Forgive me if I state the obvious, but make sure what you have is really a CD-R and not a CD-RW. Your CD-R drive will not read CD-RWs.

Some normal CD-ROM and CD-R drives READ CD-RWs... the newers ones do... the older ones don't. Check how old it is.

Actually it reads in concentric circles

Oh my god I just made a computer joke. Somebody please shoot me

Yeah ken if you have an older CD-ROM it won't read CD-RW discs. The newer ones (1-2 years old... maybe 3) will read CD-RW discs.

Why ask Why?

Chances are the burn didnt take or the iso was glitched from the original source code. Maybe just maybe the rom is dirty or improperly closed from the session as could still be open but you shopuld read it if its data and not cda.

Check the make of the cdr's I've seen some instances when an older cd-rom can read one type but not another i.e. can read memorex cd's but not Imation cd's

that was on a MEMOREX cd-r 74 minutes. 650mb (the cd top is gold where they have all this info)

the ones he just did for me (current)
both are the same cd-r disk, 1 has pictures..which i cant get to work at all, and the other is music...WHICH WORKS just fine

these are on a cd-r 700mb/ 80 minutes (and the top of the cd where the info is , is white (MEMOREX)

That might be your problem... If the cd-rom is a couple years old it will not understand the new 700meg fromat.

It's like putting a PCIII on my 94 kawi. It doesn't know it even exists(SP?)

Yeah what he said. OLD Cd-Rom drives don't like 80 minute CDs. Try burning it on a 74-minute CD.

You're gonna need a new 74m/650meg CD though.

I was just thinking about this after my previous post, but is it possible that your friend had used a CD-RW and not closed the CD? If he didn't close it so that it could not be written to (and was kept rewriteable) it wouldn't be able to be read and wouldn't show any data when loaded in your drive.

That was going to be my suggestion. I have no idea why I even have cd-rw's. I just use the CD-R's

Life is too short to ride anything but an R1

I use CDRWs for backups. Much faster than streaming tape! Should be more reliable than tape too. Also inexpensive.
