Passenger M-class/helmet law in Chicago?

A bud of mine that works in the city mentioned the other day that the Chicago cops are writing tickets if you're passenger doesn't have an M class license and that they don't have a helmet on? Didn't make ANY sense to me, but he swears its true.

Anyone heard of this BS?

I haven't heard that bs. I don't see how cops could write a ticket for a passenger without an M class. How fucked up is that? Does that mean you'll get a ticket if you have a kid on the back of a Goldwing? Shit, might as well give soccermoms a ticket because you know those kids in the back don't have driver's licenses.

Now, the helmet thing.... don't know about it, but I can see the city trying something like that.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

I know as a driver of a car you can get a ticket if the passenger doesn'thave a seat belt on even if you do. I was a witness to that so I know its true. So anything is possible It might be something the City is going for. But the whole helmet law debate has been around forever. I remember at the end of last season the rumor was that this year there would be a helmet law and there still wasn't one. I think its just all rumors.

I call it BS. Or some cop got it way too far up his ass.

IL law states that passenger must reach foot pegs and wear eye protection. State of IL is a helmet free state. No, we are not going to debate this point. Which means that no one is required to wear one.

If this story is true, that cop should be reported to his superior. It is blunt obuse of the power given to him/her.

That's BS.
too bad he'll have to go to court to get out of the ticket.

I was pulled over this summer (got a warning) by a female officer (in a KMart parking lot) because my passenger wasn't wearing any eye protection. Don't know if it's true but I bought some cheapo sunglasses just in case.

Yes it is true. eye protection is the only requirement in this state. basically you can go butt naked as long as you have your glasses on.

That true because there IS an eye protection law, just like there IS a seatbelt law.

There is no such helmet law.

Eye protection law

check it yourself --->> http://home.ama-cycle.org/amaccess/l...t.asp?state=il

Road

Safety Helmet: Not Required
Eye Protection: Required by law unless equipped with windscreen

Keyword is 'windscreen' not windshield... so therefore as long as you have that plastic 'screen' yer good (i plan on testing this soon)

Keep in mind that it has to reach to above your eye level. So, any sport bike shield is worthless unless you can prove that you are always in the fetus position.

2 totally different things. Wearing your seatbelt is the law. There is no law that says you have to wear a helmet in IL. Your comparing apples to oranges.

Exactly. There is no helmet law, and the State already told the City that it can't make riders wear helmets. Now the city is going after passengers? I call

I thought it was only if the passengers were under 18, then the driver gets the ticket. If the passenger is over 18, then he/she gets the ticket.

I haven't heard of this, but I'd be very interested to see what code section the officer's citing under. The only way I can see a ticket like that being even plausible would be if it were for reckless endangerment, or something like that.
