Essay question?

Ok so i am applying at Columbia and there is an essay you have to write like most colleges. So this one kinda got me ... there are so many things i can write about.... here is the essay question.

Leaving aside political divisions and relgious distinctions, what conepts would you use to seporate people in two distinct groups? Why did you choose this concept? Where does your dividing ling occur? What assumptions can you make about the person on each side? What do you think you assumptions reveal about you?

Holy crap, there are so many i can choose from to distince two groups of people!

I have been asking people and no one has said the same thing, and i have been getting some really good ones and funny ones... but i was just wondering what you would choose to distinct two groups of people?
Kinda hard isnt??

Bikes can be replaced...people can't...ride safe!!

+1. I was going to say that or you could divide the world between Riders and Non-Riders. Or even better, those cool-ass riders who ride Kawasakis and the lame-o's that don't.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Rhose that have money for tuition and those who don't.

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but it appears that all that they are asking is for you to SEPARATE (not seporate - sp?) all people into two distict groups. If that is, in fact, the case, then I would say...

Group-1: Male
Group-2: Female

Easy to define the distinction between the two groups, and create a justification for your choices. Don't read too much into the original question.

Good Luck

Given the context(Columbia College) I would break people down into creative thinkers and technical thinkers. You can expound on positive attribute of both and how they fit into the world. You do not want to be negative towards either considering that you don't know your audience.

My wife works for Columbia in the Graduate school and teaches there part time.

well, Columbia is an arts school...

You could analyze the type types of thinkers in the world. The analytical, and the artistic. It would probably be difficult to cleary define the two, and probably beyond the scope of an entrance exam essay. Also, consider A vs. B personality. Try to think of something that EVERYBODY fits into one catagory or the other. Try not to pick something with a VERY large grey area. I would avoid religion, politics, and abortion as topics. Just a few ideas

You could use anything. I would suggest using something that is unique, but not too far into left field or they will think you are wacked out, or trying TOO hard.

Just be sure to illustrate your assumptions, and to provide a good justification for everything you say. Be sure to not be too long winded while simultaneously being very clear.

I won a $24,000 scholarship to Tulane by dividing a piece of paper into 4 boxes and putting a stick figure into each one-- so trust me-- anything is possible.

Mental note, don't send kid to Tulane (or hire a heart surgeon/lawyer/architect, etc. from Tulane)

There are three kinds of people in this world. Those who can count, and those who can't.

As far as this goes, you could divide up people into blue collar and white collar workers, and interview a lot of each and see their different world views.

Oh yeah, HEX wasn't that hard, and binary was really easy, 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256...
