Getting out of Bally's gym contract...

Has anybody successfully gotten out of those iron-clad Bally's contracts? My wife trusted the Bally's salesguy too much who was lying straight through his teeth when he said she can cancel at any time with a $50 penalty. I wish I was there with her to laugh in his face. Needless to say she didn't read the contract carefully.

After I read the contract months later, I realized that the $1700 or whatever enrollment fee (which is financed thru monthly payments disguised as a "monthly membership fee") is completely non-refundable unless you die or move >25 miles from a Bally's. So she can cancel her membership at the gym but she still has to cough up the rest of the $1700. After poking around on google and reading a bunch of horror stories with Bally's, I can't believe this company is still in business.

The only reason she wants to cancel is because the Bally's gyms around us are filthy (she lived elsewhere when she joined), so she decided to join my gym. However, Bally's won't let her cancel the contract. I personally can't believe the contract is so customer-unfriendly for such a large, nationwide company...even if the gym is a dump or you don't like it, you have no right to cancel? wtf?

I need your boots, your clothes, and your motorcycle.

some of these contracts can be sold, for a one time fee. I've purchased mine online that way (of course, I can't resell it, but its better than nothing)

Good luck.

Also, you might want to pay $100 to have a lawyer read through it. You might be able to get out of it.

Don't know about cancelling, but she can always sell it for whatever she still owes....

Went through this about 10 years ago. Same story. I escalated it to the point of getting court summons. If memory serves, I was able to convince them (outside of court) that I was very clear about wanting a short term contract, and was told that the one I got was just that. (at the time I was looking for a summer time gym while going to school).

It was a HUGE pain in the ass. Since then they've come up with some sort of "student program" or something. Not sure what angles you're going to have. All I can say is "good luck".

Bally's.

I hope you have better luck than I did. This just so happens to be the contract where I learned my lesson about reading the fine print on every contract I signed thereafter. They are snakes. I got the same B.S. story about being able to cancel for 100 fee. Good luck, seriously.

I got out twice. I was still in high school the first time, and about 10 years later, got out again. I went to my doctor, and he gave me a letter that I should not be doing physical activities due to some back problem(he came up with something good). I gave that to the manager, and also my credit card company(not sure on the CC company). No problems.

Actually, they are having some problems due to having to restate some of their accounting (or something of that nature). I do know that they announced Monday that they were selling the Crunch division by the end of the year.. Is your membership good at any Crunch locations? If so, keep an eye out for any "spinoff" specials. If not, see if you can gain admittance to one and take it from there.

I had to change my license, wait 2 months and then was able to cancel it. The cost was two months of membership and twice for going to DMV for address change.

I've gotten out of cell phone contracts using someone elses address in the boonies where there was no coverage. I would think that that would work......

There are not many.. They are closing locations around the burbs. With their accounting issues I can see them getting bought within the next year by some other gym, powerhouse, xsport, worldgym ect... Lifetime is killing them.

I got out twice.. You have to prove that you live so many miles from one of their locations.. I think it's like 25... I went back when I moved back to Naperville, my annual dues were only $99 per year after the five year contract.. They may suck but at that I can deal with it..

Depending on how much you owe, ebay might be the best option. I bought mine online for a little over $1k, but that was for a membership that is $5 per month. You can list it and set your reserve at what you owe. You never know, you may make a few bucks in the process.

Sheeeit, thx for the suggestions. I'll try selling it on ebay 1st. Failing that, I'll file a consumer complaint with the IL attorney general for their deceptive business practices.
