XM vs. Sirius

Since we all seem to be in a similar boat with 94.7 gone, well atleast the rock aspect of it, I am seriously considering satellite radio. I just can't stand Mancow in the morning, and 95.1's morning show isn't that great from what I have heard. And I like to listen to rock music. Hard to get nowadays. Plus it would be nice to not listen to commercials. From doing a little research on this board, there is definetly a good amount of people that have satellite radio. But which company do you have? I seem to like XM's units better, but from what I have read, Sirius has better progams. So what's everyone's thoughts and opinions. This might be helpful for a bunch of us.

If i go with Satelite radio, it will definatelly be Sirius. Better units are no good if they don't play good stuff.

Been told by a stereo guy that Sirrius has better sound quallity due to their broadcasting bandwidth or something. Looking into it myself.

Life has no instruction manual. Parts and labor can be impossible to find. Many go down the road with parts that are in need of service. A breakdown is eventual.

I have XM and I love it! It came on my car so I saw no reason to switch. Music in the morning is a WHOLE lot better then the talkshows.

Ride smart... stupid hurts.

Everyone crashes. Some get back on. Some don't. Some can't...

i have XM radio, when I bought mine (almost a year ago) I was convinced that XM had better reception because my buddies with XM never had dead air, but when I would rent cars with siruis I would get dead air from time to time. well, I found out after i bought it that you will get dead air on both, but VERY rarely.

That being said, there are only about 4~5 stations on XM that I listen to, 54, 48, 44, 47, 22. Usually between one of those stations, which are all almost commercial free, I can find something that is worth listening to. I listen to my XM all the time, I never use my CD player anymore and when I got the XM, my AM/FM doesn't EVER get used.

Xm

I have XM and I love it. My Blackwood didn't come equipped with satalite radio, so I had to buy the XM unit. I think that XM has better units than siruis. The one I have can connect to your home stereo tuner. The cool thing about XM is that it has about 9 to 11 heavy rock, INDE, and alternative channels. My girl loves it for all the oldies channels it has. The only down fall for me was that I like to listen to old school Hip Hop and the only have one channel for it. I really don't listen to rap, and it unfortunatlly has about 5 rap channels. My Buddy has Sirius and he loves it. We actually swithced for about a week and I think the best way to compare them both would be like comparing a Chevy with a Ford, Mercedes with BMW, ect. Just depends on what you like. I am a fan of baseball but I am a bigger fan of College Football and XM has about 10 college football channels. I would go with XM. You might want to go to Sirius if you like talk shows. I think Stern is going to sirius.

Log onto both sites and request a free trial. I listened to both for about a day and Sirius was the winner hands down. I can drive for hours and always find something good on. They have some really good rock stations, but from time to time they get a tad repetative. Not nearly as bad as the radio, but it's noticable. Only time I drop signal is under larger overpasses and parking under trees.

Best part, streaming music at work.
Sucky part, when another station is broadcasting at your freq and you have to change yours to avoid the static.

I don't have either but I question the sanity of Sirius for paying Howard Stern millions of dollars for a 5 year contract.

They're pissing away so much money that they don't have that it'll be a loooooong time before they become profitable (if ever). So when they go all the way down the financial toilet swirl and somebody picks up the Chapter 11 bits & pieces for cheap you guys will have a whole bunch of shiny tech garbage.

I'd look more at XM if you were considering a service.

Siruis all the way. They are investing heavily into their technology and programming. Howard Stern's move to Sirius is going to drive the nails into the terrestrial radio coffin. I think the only thing XM has going for it is name recognition, it slides off the tongue easier.

Best advice: log onto XM and Sirius' web sites and do the trial thing and make your decision based on what you hear, not what people say.

I would agree with Ernie. The government had to give Sirius a large chunk of money last year to keep them afloat. The government was concerned with XM having a monopoly if Sirius went under.

It all goes back together the way it came apart...unless it came apart at redline!

the funny thing is that when sirius went public on the stock market, a share was pennies on the dollar compared to what xm was at that time. Now, I believe it has increased to around 15 or 20 bucks a share. I think sirius will spend everything they gained when they went public.

XM has been very good to me. I have it in two of my cars. the only thing Sirus has over XM is the hair band channel which I would like, (yes I know about boneyard but it sucks)but it wasnt worth buying all new equipment fo that. Add me to the pile of people that think XM will be around longer also.

Well, figured I'd bring this back. I ended up gettin Sirius about 2 months ago. And i love it. Though if ya listen to one channel a lot, you will notice repeats. Not too bad though. There is more than plenty of channels to make up for it. Not to mention, I love their comedy, politics and sport channels.

As for few of you thinking it was a dumb move to pay so much for Howard, I don't know where i stand. Forgot the exact numbers, but he did bring a whole lot of subscribers to Sirius, but not sure if it's enough. Specially after this is happening: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/200...irony_her.html

I have had XM for about 3 months now, and I can't complain. It is too bad that I had to resort to paying for programing, but it beats the hell out of what is availible on FM.

Ground Control to Major Tom

I have a Kenwood radio for the car with all the toys. One of the things included is Sirius ready. I wanted them because XM just didn't offer what I wanted. That's what it came down to.
As far as their money scenario, Howard Stern and whatever, I think it'll pass. What I've noticed about Sirius is that they're hooking up with chains like Circuit City and installing their stuff in high end stuff. I think they're doing a backdoor thing on XM.
No hard evidence but that's what I've noticed.

I've had xm for a couple years now. I am cancelling it. I bought an Ipod, now I just listen to my music when I want where I want. I still find myself channel surfing with XM and nothing is on. When I went to satelite i went from 13 channels of shit to 150

I've had XM for a few mos. now and I love it. The decades channels, and the MIX channel is what I usually listen to, also, occasionally it's dance music channel when I can't seem to stay awake while driving. Admittaly I've had very occasional signal loss that only lasts a few seconds, but it's better than the commercial dead air on FM.
