By practicing on shorter races first. Even that 500 is fricken long. Most of the racers practice on 25-100 mile races year round for the Baja race. And it's quite dangerous, the sand dunes move a bit and hide a lot. Look at Paris-Dakar, usually AT LEAST one bike racer dies a year on that race, usually from some super scary, wild crash.

If you ever see Monte Lutz from Sport Bike Track Time. Ask him about his Baja 500 Racing. I guess the Mexicans set Booby Traps down there. Monte was racing at night and was about 50 miles away from his next check point when he hit a ravine and flipped over the bars all by himself in the middle of nowhere. When he woke up, he couldn't find his bike for about a half hour. He finally found his bike by listening for the ticking of the exhaust. Pretty scary shit man! Especially racing at night all by yourself in the middle of the desert.

Before you try a race like that Chris you better have some serious seat time on a big dirt bike. Get stuck alot, crash, flip over... and be able to push that bike out of anything, deep mud, sand or whatever. And especially be able to get the bike off of you all by yourself. Because you will be all alone out there, with nobody to help you.

No corner workers, no ambulance, No help, all by yourself, and 100 miles between you and nowhere! Sounds pretty scary to me, I don't care how good of rider someone is.

oh i know man, I wasnt planning to go next year. More curious as to what goes into this, training, planning, cost, travel, etc. Insane or not, its one of those things that would be beyond fun/challenging/exciting.

Full body motard!

Anyone ever notice how similar the words motard and retard are?

That looks so grueling, I know at my age I would never be able to get into good enough physical shape to even attempt it. Get me a beer biotch!

Yeah that movie kicked @$$!!! My friend is planning on eventually doing the 500 race but needs some more experience in it...Any ideas where some shorter races are to get some practice? We're thinking about going to Baja, Mexico for the 1000 race in November but not sure about it yet...not racing, purely spectating...

Chris this might give you a little insight to what you think you might be interested in.

http://www.desertracing.com/news/200...e_baja500.html

I especially like the part where it says 6 seperate classes in the race had no finishers.

And you could have Robby gordon chasin your ass through the desert in a 800 HP truck!!

This is gonna hurt!

I loved it! So did Dave and Marshall. If you don't like Baja racing, this may not be for you. If you like ANY kind of motorcycle racing, this is a great DVD.

its a good movie...that one guy that broke his ribs in the end still rode and a fucked up bike and wrist to boot...that shit is dangerious on a bike big time...not too much to worry about in a car though...car has protection 360 degrees around you...but if you do get stuck in the bunkers that are like quicksand...your STUCK...

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!
