anyone else have a gas fireplace in the bedroom?

well this winter one of my projects is to finally install one and mantal in my bed room, i am wondering if i should get the vent free kind "like we thought when we had the home built" of should i vent it regaurdless.

i had a gas line routed to our retreat room in our bed room.

kinda looking for the pro's and con's of what you guys got and base what i do off that perhaps.

Well, I work in a place with about tree hundred fireplaces. All of them are gas and most are vent free. Now, I donít know if itís the brand, but they suck.

First, manufacturer suggests running for not more then 20 minutes at a time, due to health hazard. I am not sure to the health hazard of it, but it the smell sure gets unpleasant. Something to think about considering it is your bedroom.

Second, the heat has nowhere to go but going right up the wall. The problem we had was that peopleís paintings were getting ruined due to the heat. So now their choice is either to purchase an approved mantel or leave the wall naked.

Third, fireplace is not really a fireplace without the cracking sound of the wood burning (personal opinion).

Now about vented fireplaces, the two things that I came across were opening and closing the vent and birds getting in. The reason for that is that the contractors put a vent closer inside the fireplace so you have to wait for it to cool, and people either forget to close it and then complain about a draft or touch while it is still hot. And no one installed bird screens on the vent.

Sorry for the long post, hope it helps.
