I hope you have renter's coverage. You're on the ground floor, right? I strongly suggest looking into a security system. And if you keep your window open, put a bar or something above the window sash to keep anyone from opening it wide enough to get in.
Had a similar situation when I was 13... somebody(s) broke into our house in Buffalo Grove while my grandmother was sleeping... They had hauled the TV, stereo, etc. out into our driveway - apparently we came home before they could load everything up and haul it away.
