Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3

Well, the first round does go to the 360. Personally I think the K.O. will go to PS3. Those who thought that PS3 won't make it are sorely wrong. Just like the craziness of the debut of the 360, PS3 plans on doing the same thing the middle of next year by taking advantage of Blu-Ray technology (I've been waiting on this for a while now), having a faster processor and better bundle than the 360 and all about the same price.

Check out the short article.

Biggest thing for me is that PS3 does not offer a service similar to Xbox Live. I also bet the price of Xbox360 will drop the day PS3 comes out. Blu-Ray is a toss up, I don't see it being necessary for games, but it will be nice that it plays the movies. Graphics wise time will tell, but I bet they are both very similar in the end with a slight advantage going tp PS3.

Oh and for what it's worth, PS3 will not have Halo 3...so that pretty much makes up my mind, haha.

Wonder if the PS3 is going to have an HDMI port with HDCP? Because it's been stated that some blu-ray discs will be "mated" to a single player and won't play in any player but the first one inserted in (how this is accomplished I've yet to figure out), and if you don't have the player hooked up HDMI <-> HDMI with both devices having HDCP DRM, the quality will be degraded.

There's a LOT of questions that need answered about the blu-ray format and sony before a good idea of what the ps3 is going to do on that front.

This is true. I keep hearing that Blu Ray at 1080p and with DTS ES and/or Dolby Digital Plus has a bigger throughput than the current HDMI specification.

PS3 will have 2 HDMI ports. Here are the stats on both.

http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-x-1985-x-x-x

Sony did apply for a patent that will only allow discs to be played on the original machine, but they have no said what they will be using it for.

If they put DRM on there, I am definitely staying away from it. That is why I no longer use Real player or WMV. My goodness, no one else can play your game that you bought, that is crazy. You can even let someone else drive your car or ride your bike every once and a while, this is getting ridiculous.

So, I guess I still don't get all the hype. Online games, interactive clients, PC to TV hookups... all these are available on my current PC or Mac. I love Unreal Tournament for example...

As the prices increase... never mind, I just don't get it. Hence, I play my games on a PC or Mac.

I think the ps3 will be better, but they should be since they have an extra 6 months of design time.

I'll stick with xbox though since I'm a huge fan of xbox Live...it's the only reason I still game.

There is a difference for me vs. the pc. Games sitting at a computer desk were never very comfortable for me. There is something to be said for being able to sit on your couch with the wireless remote/headset and playing Halo 2 on-line with your buds on your 57inch HD display. Same thing when you have your buds over for two player action. Most PC set ups don't do group action justice.

I know you can get some nice set ups with computers but after you get done with the video cards, remotes, nice display and seperate surround sound, you might as well have bought the 360 or PS3...

+1

Also, online competition is more fair on XBox live. You can rest assured that no one is cheating or has one up on you. Everyone has the same amount of Ram, video card, controller, etc; with a PC, it is a free for all. The only reason why your buddy is whooping you is because he spend $100 more on a better video card; you have none of these worries on XBox Live.

That's not really true. Modded xboxes can get on live. Cheating is everywhere at higher levels on halo 2. You just need a standby button on your modem or a pro action replay card. 360s also have an advantage when playing against other xboxes. When there is too much action the xbox will slow down, but the 360 isn't affected at all.

But I know what you mean about PCs having an unfair advantage...the person with the best equipment will usually win.

Mods do happen but Xbox did a good job of cracking down. The feedback system on 360 helps with this. People will always spend time and find glitches in games...

I'm ranked about a 30 in Team Slayer on Halo 2 and I'll tell you the modders and cheaters are rampant in the higher ranks. I'd say 10% of the games I play on there I get cheated on...as apposed to the 40% it used to be. As long as there are 2 month free trial you will never be rid of the cheating IMO.

Yeah cheaters suck.. What kind of issues do you have in life that you have to cheat to improve your rank on-line? I noticed a huge difference after the last update. Still one of the best on-line games ever. I can't wait for Halo 3...

The best is when you get matched up with a team from overseas and they are all speaking Serbian or some shi!.. The Brits are the best to play with. I love it when their idea of thash talk is calling you a "bloody wanker"...

Yeah, they never seem to get pissed off, ever when they're mad they sound happy. There will always be someone in the room to ask them if they're eating crumpits and drinking tea, by which they will respond with us drinking beer and shooting at cans in the back yard, it's awesome.

I'm at a 33 now. I can't go up any higher since I'll lose half of my games just to cheaters. I just started playing team hardcore instead, since my rank is really low and I can kick the crap out of people in it and not have to deal with fat 10 year olds standbying.

The brits are hilarious, always bitching about having to drive the warthog on the wrong side.

Yea I go from 25-32 all the time. It is hard to improve or even maintain sometimes with all of the cheating/deleveling that goes on.

Team Hardcore is sweet, but the pace gives me a headache

It looks like the ps3 will have the potential to be the more powerful console, but it also is going to be alot harder to extract that performance. Bottom line is really that developers will make it for the lowest common denominator in order to reach the largest market possible. MS is going to have a large enough percentage of next gen to not be ignored. Likely the ps3's extra power if it materializes will just goto waste just like the extra power of the xbox went to waste on the great majority of titles in this Gen.

FWIW Sony has about a 60 share of this gen MS and Nintendo with about 20 each. Nintendo isnt really stepping up with a next gen system. The revolution is more 1.25 gen + a gimick controler. I suspect that the Market share will be more like 50/40/10 sony/ms/nintendo this time around.

Only time will tell I guess. I have one of the new 360's and it looks awesome though.

I think Sony will take advantage of Blu-Ray. Their president isn't for online gaming. He thinks that the future will be this Blu-Ray. Now I'm not saying I'm for cancelling online gaming, but remember - this is Sony. They're pretty powerful. They are going to push the consoles so that they can push the movies, hence push Blu-Ray technology. Hell, they own almost all of them! lol

It'll be a risk, but I think it's going to be worth it. As a pc gamer, I truly think the end result will be eventually consoles being so much like pc's that they wil morph into one. Give it 5 years or so.

First off, Sony as a company has long since lost me in terms of quality. Sony is something I used to be proud to buy, now they're easily beaten in every department...Sound systems, cameras, software, music...they've messed up under their new ownership and I think the name is not what it used to be.

Sony vs Xbox doesn't matter. Sure the hardware will be better, but can it be utilized? That's the question. And will developers even bother to make big titles for it? I see it as this. Sony is basically making a very high end race bike, but only has so-so riders in the pits. Sure you'll have this great machine which is a pain to code or develop for. Not to mention, today you're dead in the water if you don't have excellent online capabilities, so that should be Sony's biggest concern. But they've really already lost that front, I know more people that have gone from Sony to Xbox than the other way around. Why would I bother giving up my established account with Microsoft to go to Sony anyway?

And Loki, I slightly disagree that the machines will morph into a pretty pc. What I see is that these systems will of course by similar to a pc on the inside, but have a central purpose in the home. They will be somewhere you can easily connect to for music, games, maybe movies. If anything I'd imagine the game consoles becoming more of a media center, taking wireless inputs and being a lot more of a central point than a pc. Maybe even a built in TIVO or other DVR.

Correct Crazy, however some would be perfectly happy hopping from system to system depending on what they like better. How many here have stuck with one line of anything? There's going to be a few, but most of us have changed systems over the years.

For me: Atari->Nintendo NES->Sega Genesis->(added) Sega CD->Playstation->Xbox

Thanks Biggy. Okay, so you can pack more info on a DVD with Blu-ray. That means you can have better graphics and better games with a console that uses this technology, right? I used to be into this kind of stuff but I got out of it 3 years ago. Now I'm so lost with all the new sh*t coming out.

Well a few years back they were talking about putting it in DVD Players by default. It was to eliminate the red ray that is standard. I was ready because it was suppose to come to PC's and never did. Sony wants to start it in consoles so that it can take off into other streams. Remember, Sony isn't just about PlayStations.

I think this will take off like crazy. It reminds me of when Bluetooth was first introduced. Nobody thought it would work at the Electronic Conforences. And now, IT'S EVERYWHERE where there is technology. It's earpieces, Palms, printers, keyboards, etc. If I had the loot, I would buy stock in it.

Also, I don't think people will be so loyal as it's been stated to a particular console. It's not like politics here in America where if you're Republican you have to stay that way and visa versa. Just like politics used to be maybe 30 years ago or so, it was actually o.k. to switch parties. I think the same is so with consoles.

If anything I know more people with both than just one. Too bad ya can't say that about politics.

Hey Loki, what's "luposlipophobia"?

Its the fear of being eaten by a pack of wolves that are chasing you around a kitchen table on a floor that's just been waxed while wearing tube socks.

And I was trying to think seriously what that was. I saw "lup" as in the Latin "Lupus" which means wolf. Then I looked again and saw the definition.

Good one!
