I feel for you guys though; they get you all addicted, then tell you to stop doing it everywhere. I knew it was coming here soon. I used to work at Carle Hospital in Urbana, IL. They used to have a little smoking patio outside of the building for the smokers, I thought that was a good compromise, but then they dropped the ball, and said no smoking anywhere around the hospital. Carle owns about three city blocks of land down there. Therefore, if you have to smoke you have to walk three blocks away to do it; that is crazy, especially with temps like this outside. Now you guys have more of an inentive to try the gum or patch .

Yay! It is about freaking time. I am sick of going out and coming back smelling like a chimney. Smokers will just have to deal with it.

I spent 18 months at NorthWestern's cancer ward watching people slowly die of cancer. One of them was my father. So this is for your own good.

I wonder if they even consider a comprimise. Like a real barrier, or seperate room with filters.

I don't smoke, but this just seems asinine.

I think it's good idea, mainly cause of the people who work there. I wouldn't want to work in a place filled with smoke 40 hours a week

Yea "Additionally, if a restaurant bar or tavern can show it has installed air purification equipment that ensures the same air quality inside as outside, it will be granted a permanent exemption from the smoking ban. Eleventh-hour negotiations were necessary overnight to resolve the air purification issue."

Stupid. Second hand smoke is much less of an impact on health than most people think anyway. Really they just made a law against an inconvenient smell. Moronic.

I'm guessing this is not going to be cost effective, or easy to aquire. Air quality in the city isn't great, but still hard to match.

Smoking is banned on CTA EL platforms, but smoking is allowed on the Union Station Metra platforms...I'm tired of walking through a cloud of smoke going to and from my train. Makes no sense to me.

Good to see that the city did not ban smoking in a cigar bars or cigar shops. Some municipalities have a TOTAL smoking ban, so that a cigar aficionado can't even light up in a cigar shop.

Here's the two most common things I hear from people for the ban. "I won't smell bad." and "I quit/am trying to quit, so this makes it easier." These are personal reasons. We are giving up our liberties because we don't want our clothes or hair to smell the next day? This worries me heavily.

We are much more impacted by air pollution than second hand smoke. Second hand smoke is not even close to being on the radar as being a killer of any statistical relevance. Anyone else concerned?

Most cities with smoking bans from what I've heard are not totally smoke free. I know Skokie for example is unrestricted in smoking when it comes to a tobacco shop (spoke with the owner of Cigar King). According to him most tobacco shops in other areas where smoking is banned are unaffected unless it's by the actual sales figures of tobacco.

Yet another polarization of issues. First they ban smoking and soon they will making breathing without a license illegal right?

Liberty? The same argument can be made for people who smoke crack cocaine. It is their liberty right? I could care less what people do with their lives as long as it does not infringe on my liberties. No one is saying you can't smoke, you just can't smoke and infringe on the rights of people who chose not to smoke.

I personally know of three people who would disagree with you. One is a neurosurgeon, the other a radiation oncologists and the third hemotology oncologist. These experts in their field are not alone.
