DirectTV HD Necessary Equipment?

Ok my buddy has got a DirecTV HD receiver, and he has a regular dish. He says he needs a newer dish, but I don't see different options between a regular package and an HD package on the DirecTV web site.

Is there a different dish for HD? Can it be purchased locally if so? Like today in time for the bears game on ESPN?

You will need an oval 24" dish with 3 heads.

Is there anywhere local to purchase that? I don't think Circuit City will sell a dish seperate from an entire kit.

yep! Just got mine!
24"oval with 5 LNB's

they just came out 2 weeks ago (according to Apex (installer))

There are 5 birds up there but only 4 work for now HD subscribers should be happy when the 5th bird comes online i am told!

It has a bigger mast and plate so your old dish is useless.
The installer brought mine out so i have no idea where you would buy this thing.

Yea he had the old dish hooked up. We ended up scoring one at Circuit City. 99.99 for the dish alone. They didn't want to sell it to us, they said you had to sign up for a subscription in order to purchase equipment from them.

My buddy said alright, I called DirectTV and they said to come to you or Best Buy to get a dish. I have no problem heading down the street to Best Buy. Low and behold 5 minutes later they came out with a dish for us.

Got home an hour before game time...picture 3 idiots on the roof in arctic weather trying to line up the new dish It was worth it in the end though. GO BEARS!

In order to recieve HD you need a triple, in order to lock on to certain sats. In order to recieve the brand new mpeg4 HD signals you need the new 5 LNB dish.

Locals in HD are available via DirecTV in chicago. But you need the new 5-LNB dish and HD recievers that are compatible with mpeg4. There are currently no DirecTV-DVR's that support this though, that is what I'm waiting for.

Tony the 5 LNB's are a must---soon!

The 2 little extra LNB's are to get Local channels in High Definition and a new bird thats up there but not yet active. You dont need anything yet because you have the HD antenna.

I have Comcast cable so I don't have an issue Just no HDTV to support my service, haha.

I'm waiting as well for HD content via DirecTV. It is redicous what is needed and the price involved just to get a few HD channels. If and when the time comes, I expect DirecTV to pay for the 5LNB dish.

All that said, my rooftop antenna works like a charm and Comcast cable is looking more and more promising for HD content.

I cant believe they would charge you for the upgrade. Its 2 small little LNB's that attach to the main LNB.

Now the mpeg4 reciever i know is 199 with a 199 rebate.
