Heated Debate At Work!!! Need Help!

OK.
So aside from searching the internet, (which I will as soon as I finish this..)

Myth or fact......true or false

Water drains one way in the Northern hemisphere and the opposite in the southern....
If true...anyone know why?

I say it does.......

True

I cant remember why. I just recall seeing the top half having circular patterns that were opposite of the southern hemisphere in my school book.

Same here, it's amazing how much stupid knowledge I have in my head, yet I forget where I put my car keys and my work password logons...

It's true (don't even need to look it up) and if memory serves me right, it is due to the Coriolis (sp?) Effect.

Yeah, but you have no "jets" on your bath tub, right? and the water spins there?

its says it depends on the drain and toilet. But with hurricans, the north and south hemisphere will differ.

A useless question that will not effect real life and will only be on jeapordy. And people that are not working right now.

Accroding to Wikipedia...

It looks as if it is possible for the Coriolis Effect to have an influence on the draining of water. However, for the effect to occur, the drainage system has to be in near perfect conditions.

The physics is only effective on large bodies of water. So, your toilet water is not effected.

A toilet swirls in one direction because of the direction the water jets are pointed. You can make toilet water go either direction or no direction. Toliet water does not swirl because of any meteorological effect.

What about the water draining in your bath tub?
Also, based on your reply, it is possible to have 2 toliet bowls next to each other and have the water drain in opposite directions?

Hey man, I'm just talking about the toilet. Don't be laying your bath tub shit on my lap. I don't know about the tub water thing.

To answer your tub thing:

"most basins have irregular surfaces and are not perfectly level, factors which influence the direction in which water spirals down their drains. The configuration of taps and drains is responsible for the direction of spin given to water draining from sinks and bathtubs to a degree that overwhelms the slight influence of the Coriolis force.

I had to take an oceanography class last semester.

Anyway, the most important thing is the shape of the drain/basin in a bathtub, toilet, whatever. The coriolis effect isn't acting on your toilet. If it did have an effect on short distances, you wouldn't even be able to throw a baseball straight.

You could have 2 toilets next to eachother with water spinning in opposite ways depending on the toilet design.
