USB 2.0 is a hardware thing. Your motherboard has have it. Its something that came out a few years ago.

It will be quite a bit faster, if it really bothers you, and youre not gonna spring for a new computer, there are 2.0 USB PCI cards for older computers.

That will only run at 1.1 speed.

If you are plugging it into a front-panel USB port or a hub, try plugging the Ipod directly into a port on the rear of the computer right next to the network or keyboard connectors.

Some motherboards will have a 2.0 USB controller for onboard connectors, but the additional USB ports will have a 1.1 controller.

I disagree, 1.1 will cause problems if you are moving large files. It also won't charge the battery. Plugging it into a USB hub that has a powersource will allow it to charge but I would recommend going with a PCI card to give you USB 2.0. They cheap for PC's.

how big were the files you were moving? MP3 files are 4-15 meg and the video files could be as big as two or three gig with the video. The GF's older ibook with 1.1 would not sync with the Ipod or charge it. Only the first song would load on each of her CD's. If it was me I would rather spend $10 on a USB 2.0 card then $20-30 for a charger and still be transferring at the slower speed.

neato, I wonder if it really is 2.0 but it's not detecting for some reason. If it's charging I bet you'll be fine with what you have.

Yeah, your labtop only has USB 1.1 capabilities. Get the PC card to upgrade to 2.0

USB 1.1 has a transfer speed of around 12 megabits/second
USB 2.0 has a transfer speed or around 500 megabits/second

Big difference in speed, that is all. Both versions will power most small devices (Ipods, flash cards, scanner). Hard drives and other larger devices may need an external power supply.
