Well.. uh.. work on that while the computer's still broken then, I guess. You'll need some practice 'fore you can hang anyhow.

No. I'm just gonna set up a separate Linux box to act as a firewall/router. Once the RedHat site cools down, I'll pop on and download the new RedHat 8.0. I guess it's supposed to have a bunch of security fixes in it over the version I have (6.x) Then I'll get it all hooked up.

So Omni what are the specs of the system. How big is the antenna, how is it mounted and are these guys any good at running wire through the house without it looking like hell? I need to know this crap before I give up on waiting for DSL to come just a few more blocks to my place.

Mmm, and also, go to dslreports.com and see what kinda upload/download speeds you're getting. I wanna see if it's as incredible as was apparently possible!

The antenna is TINY. It's kind of a rectangle piece, stuck on a pole. The rectangle piece is smaller than a piece of paper... maybe 8x10, and MAYBE an inch thick. The pole is about a foot long, maybe a foot and a half. The whole thing is smaller than my DirecTV dish. I was quite surprised - from the pics on their website, the antenna is HUGE. But it's not - it's really small.

The installers were, well, uhm, uh... not so good. Actually, very disappointing. They got the thing on the roof fine. They didn't bring a ladder (one that you could use in a house) so he had to climb up into the attic from a tiny-ass step stool. Kinda humorous to watch, actually. I'd have offered him my ladder, but I don't have one. He poked the cable into the attic, and when I told him which wall I wanted the jack on, he just kinda looked at me, and said he didn't know how he could get it in the wall (???) I told him to just follow the conduit down for one of the electrical sockets, and he said he couldn't. I told him to just poke a hole, and let the cable run out, and I could put a jack and faceplate on myself... but then he said "I am afraid to poke hole in nice new house." The room that I wanted it in has 3 exterior walls, so maybe it's not possible to do, with the insulation and all (??) I don't know, I know NOTHING about home improvement stuff. So, right now, (don't laugh), I just have the cable coming down out of the attic opening. Ridiculous, yes. But I already have cables running down the hall anyway, as there aren't any phone jacks in the computer room. I figure I'll have my dad, or a friend who's an electrician, come out and get the wire routed into a wall. As it was, the guy was walking around in the attic, kneeling down on the freaking CEILING (drywall!) I wanted him OUT before he fell through.

My recommendation to you: hope you don't get the Polish guys to install it. Unless you speak Polish. Then maybe you'll get a better deal. My Polish speaking skills are almost non-existent, so I didn't even bother trying.

First time I ran it, I got this:

2002-12-05 22:44:49 EST: 657 / 4264
Your download speed : 657223 bps, or 657 kbps.
A 80.2 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 4264392 bps, or 4264 kbps.

But I forgot I had Kazaa running in the background with a bunch of downloads going. I tried running it again, and couldn't get back in. The site suggests I do some 'tweaking' - and looking at the results, I'm way slow compared to what others have scored from dls.net. The highest one listed was 7577/4444.

I don't know what good tweaking will do... I've already downloaded a few files at over 900k/s... which is right up there with the rating at 10M/s.

I'd be curious to see what the latency is though. Games, escpecially first person shooter, racing, or any fast paced action games may not be so well, even though you have a ton of bandwidth. A good test would be to ping your ISP's DNS server or something internal to their network. Anything more than 50 would be kind of high. Screw waiting to dl redhat, get Mandrake 9.

Well I did the "tweak test" on the dsl reports page, and whatever it pinged, it did 10 of them, and they were all 30s and 31s.

If I ping www.dls.net from the command prompt, I get this:

Reply from 216.145.234.4: bytes=32 time=9ms TTL=252
Reply from 216.145.234.4: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=252

The highest was a 39, but it seems to mainly hover around 30.

That's pretty sweet. I might have to look into this. Normally with a microwave system, especially covering more than a couple miles, there's serious latency. That's pretty impressive.

obijuan - I'm only 1/2 mile from the tower... maybe people who are further away have worse latency than I?

What are the speeds of that setup? I currently have Starband (Satellite that SUCKS) and 144k IDSL. If that is quicker I might look into it when the starband subscription runs out. Also do you know if it supports VPN?

Jim, have fun with the Polish dudes. Hopefully they'll be better to you than they were to me.

LBK - speeds are 10Mbps. And it does support VPN... I've verified that myself by connecting to work over it.
