Gateway M250E notebook opinion?

Hi:

My father in law won a M250E. http://www.gateway.com/products/GCon...=m250eb&seg=sb
It lists for $1,050ish. It has the upgraded 12 cell battery and the combo CD R/W DVD Read drive. He doesn't want it and was going to E-bay it. I have first dibs at it for $550 if I want. Aside from facts that it is light and has a huge battery life, I'm not to impressed by the specs. The Celeron M 370 is a dog. Also, ever since I got my Treo 650 I don't feel lost when I'm on the road without my old stone of a notebook. It is at the point that unless I'm doing a presentation I don't even carry it. But at 50% off list, I'm not sure I should pass it up.

Any random opinions?

Thanks

i have a gateway 6000 or something.. i forgot, a lot poeple say that gateways are crap, but i think its more what you get inside that counts. Celeron's suck in my opinion, $550 is cheap, so really its how bad you need it?

i only paid $1000, AMD Turion 64, 80gig hard drive, ATI Radeon video card, 15.4 widescreen, battery lasts like 3 hours, not sure which battery it is, think is only 1.4" thick, and its super light.

you coul dalways find good deals.

CNet gives it a 6.6 of 10.

It sounds as if $550 would be a good deal. It is not the best gaming platform, but it should work well for internet, email and MS Office if that is your primary use.

As far as Gateways being crap (Mopar...) that isn't necessarily the case. If you were buying for corporate use, that bears some weight. However, for individual use, they are usually fine for what they are intended to be, the low cost name brand.

That means that it is using the default internal IP schema and that it is a NAT router.... FWIW (although I have a sneaking suspicion that you already knew that

Switch actually...we run static at the office but a few of us got together and just set one up to run DHCP and make life easier for everyone.

As for the laptop, I wouldn't bother. For around $1000 (if you can swing it), you can get a very nice system. Gateway always ran fine for me, but they all seemed to run very hot, so I usually suggest Dell at minimum.

+1 ahh yeah forgot to mention that, if i don't put mine on a hard surface, it gets hot pretty quick, which works out nice if you have cold fingers

This is just a road toy. I have strong desktops at home and work. Heck, I currently have 2 desktops and an old Toshiba notebook wireless networked at home.

I've always thought notebooks were a general waste of $ and overpriced for the performance. But you know about boys with toys...
