Biker gangs' huge brawl shuts Indiana swap meet

April 5, 2006

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Two feuding motorcycle gangs are disputing who threw the first punch in a melee that forced police to shut down a swap meet at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Representatives of the Hells Angels and Outlaws did agree that a lingering rivalry between the groups fueled the fray Saturday. Police made no arrests because it ended so quickly.

''The big thing we want to get across [is] we go to these swap meets all the time. We didn't come there for trouble,'' Outlaws spokesman James Coppola told the South Bend Tribune for a Tuesday story.

Coppola was not at the meet but Outlaws members who were there told him the fight started when one of them was told he didn't belong there, then was shoved by a Hells Angels supporter.

Over 30 police units; no arrests

But Stevie Dowling, a Hells Angels member and Indiana spokesman for the group, said he reached the fairgrounds after the fight and was told it was the Outlaws who ''were out of line,'' and started the fight. He added that the Outlaws should never have come to the area.

Witnesses indicated it was the Outlaws' presence that was the problem, South Bend Police Division Chief Gary Horvath said Monday. The majority of the Outlaws were leaving as police were arriving.

''It really appeared the aggressor had fled the area prior to our arrival,'' Horvath said.

Dozens of people eventually joined in the fight, some with bats and hammers, with two bikers injured enough to require medical attention. More than 30 units from South Bend, St. Joseph County and Mishawaka responded to the fairgrounds.

But when officers arrived, most of the fighting was already over, Horvath said.

Police were able to detain some bikers for questioning, but because of a lack of evidence and cooperation, police took no one to jail, he said. Officers reported the event had little or no security, Horvath said.

But swap meet organizer Irfan Gill of Michigan-based Paragons Promotion disagreed, saying about five guards were on hand, which was enough security in the past.

The promotion company puts on at least six motorcycle swap meets a year and has never had problems, promoters said.

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
