Squid vs. Poser Definitions Please

So, we all have been guilty at one point in time or another of being called either a Squid or a Poser. Rightful or not, I am curious what YOUR definition of the words are....

What make a person a Squid?

What makes a person a Poser?

A squid is most generally a newer rider who is trying to "look the part" without having the necessary experience to perform as such...either that or a newer rider that thinks everyone else is impressed with his fast bike, wife-beater, flip flops and spikey hair...bottom line is a newer rider that really doesn't know any better.

A poser is a little different in that this person "knows" he is bullshitting people...likes to put a lot of racey stickers on the bike, maybe a D&D pipe so everyone knows he's there, but most importantly is portraying an image of experience and expertise that he really doesn't have.

getting back on topic...

i believe the name squid came because the animal squids need to come to an almost complete stop to turn. They are anatomically unable to turn at speed. So what does the term mean to me as a sportbike rider, it's a person who (either out of ignorance, or a lack of proper education) has no respect for himself or other around him, and generally portrays the negative stereo type that sportbikers have come to recieve.

A poser is somebody who knows better and does it either to appeal to a certain audience or for other reasons unknown to me...

in my opinion weather or not you wear gear has nothing to do with what you are, and in truth everybody at one time or another could probably fit into my definitions of the words.

Got up on the wrong side of the country today. If we're defining words and labels, I have my picture in the dictionary under the word "bitch", cross referenced with neurotic and chunky as well .

squid (skw d)
n. pl. squids or squid

A motorcycle rider who demonstrates a lack of respect for the general public and the failure to realize the possible negative impact that could result from their riding actions on public or non-public roads.

The squid is just unable to rationalize or conceptualize the possible negative outcomes resulting from their actions. This is regardless of whether or not they wear protective gear.

The squid does not realize that it is not that they are not wearing gear that makes them a squid - it is the fact that they think they are exempt from social mores and can pull a 10 o`clock wheelie on public roads or weave in and out of traffic at twice the traffic speed just because they can.

Poser (also poseur) is a derogatory term used to describe an individual seeking to identify with a particular subculture to gain social status within it. "Poser" can mean, quite literally, "one who strikes poses".

For example: Look at me on my pretty bike and looky looky look at ME!!!!! Because I'm the coolest kid in town. I can't ride worth a shit but sure do look good. Thats a poser.

Whoa Nick, those are actually well thought out.. did somebody hack your account?

I think Nick's definitions are pretty good. "Squid" is usually determined by their actions versus "poser" is more for looks and attention getting. That being said, all of us ride, at least in part, to get noticed by the fairer sex. "Posers" tend to put that as the primary reason.

True that. At SOW I saw a dude chilling in an Alpinestars (I think) jacket. Was waiting for some folks and asked him what he rode. He didn't even hide the fact that he had no bike, but just wore the jacket. That's king poser in my book.

I found that the urban dictionary usually has pretty accurate and often funny definitions to such terms. Here's the link to both.

Squid - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=squid
Poser - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=poser

Squid = Squirly Kid, the new rider with a bike that he/she can't handle.

Poser = The person on the race prepped/race replica bike that has never and will never see a track. The only track runs posers do is to the local Starbucks/bar/mall.

As clearwaterms stated, the term squid comes from the way "squids" ride, they burn up the straightaways but have to slow to 5 mph to corner because they lack the skill/control to corner well. Just like a squid which is fast going straight, but cannot turn while moving.
