Anyone near South Elgin, IL; help me inspect a used bike?

I would like to look at a used bike in South Elgin tonight around 5pm, are there any members here who would be willing to loan me 20-30 minutes of their time to inspect a used bike? This will be my first bike, and other than blatant damage, I am not sure what all to look for to judge the bike's condition. I want to make sure I am not buying something with a worn out chain/sprocket, bent forks, worn brakes, abused transmission, etc. You would not have to be around long, just enough time to give the bike a quick once over and maybe take it for a quick spin to make sure the bike is in good working order. I realize this is ultra short notice, but the help would be appreciated and I would pay $10-$15 for your time and fuel in gratitude. Contact me via PM if anyone can help a new guy out. Thanks!

Bill

Good choice, do you know if the owner will let someone ride it? Most won't. Honestly, I wouldn't want to ride a bike I didn't own anyway...you crash it, you buy it.

Other than having the owner ride it in front of you, you won't be able to tell a whole lot about the clutch and transmission.

I have always at least had the option to ride the used bike... maybe I have just been lucky.

Good Luck tonight.

I put down a deposit and will be the proud new owner of a blue 2003 Suzuki SV650! It was at WildSide Yamaha. All stock (at least it is now) with 3400 miles. I used that check list and everything looked ok to me. There was some corrosion on some of the non critical bolt heads/brackets and a few miscellaneous parts like the sprocket (not where it touches chain though). Salesman said it was likely because they had been displaying the bike since last fall. The sitting outside on rainy days in the fall and spring probably caused the corrosion. It looks like most of it could be cleaned off. Other than that, perfect paint and condition. Salesman said it had one previous owner who had upgraded to an R6 in the fall.

Took it for a test ride and it seemed to shift, brake, and accelerate nice and smooth. So, I pulled the trigger and lightened my savings account . Unfortunately, I am going out of town tomorrow for Easter, and then next week I am going to Japan for business all week. So the earliest I can pick it up is April 29th. Having to wait two weeks is a bummer, but at least I know I will have it soon.

Thanks for the offer. I realize it was ultra short notice, but I just found the bike last night and wanted to check it out now before someone else bought it as riding season approaches. Naked models of the SV650 are hard to find. As I said, if I did not look today, it would be 1.5weeks before I could look at it again.

Well then, congratulations on the new ride. Two weeks may feel very long now. LOL Most really good things have a element of anticipation about them, and a new bike is surely one of those.

Crap...I would have gone if you said it was at a dealer since I need to get an oil filter anyway. Congrats on the bike.

Thats cool. I think it will be a good bike. I don't think I got a smoking deal on it, like I could get if I was more patient for a great private party sale. But by paying a little more to get it from a dealer, I am hoping the dealer is truly honest when they say they completely inspect the bike and get it as close to new as possible (fluid changes, clean up, lube). Perhaps I am naive to assume a dealer will take care of everything, but that was my line of thinking. For a first purchase, I figured a dealer would be my safest bet to get a bike that won't break down in a month.
