Tarding a Bicycle

OK lately I've seen some really cool mountain bikes riding around with slicks for tires and what not and damn it just makes me hot.

So what you know about this?

I really want to start trail riding over the summer as a weekend thing but it would be nice to ditch the knobbies and do some actual paved trails also.

Recommend bikes to look out for, reading material, where I can get sized up for a proper fit... also would this be a huge pain in the ass and wallet? That's what I basically need to know because I'm broke as hell until I get a job or something.

like any hobby, you can do it on the cheap or you can do it expensive like. If you've got nothing to start with you can forget the "cheap" route though.

that's a pretty decent deal. if you plan to only bomb around the streets with it, then toss a rigid fork on it for cheap and put all your energy to the ground.

VCook do you ride offroad trails at all?

I'm not really sure what would be up to the task of trail riding and what wouldn't and damn if there's so many different types of bicycles to choose that it doesn't confuse the hell out of me.
