Iowa City Twisters...

Well fellas, don't know if you all heard about the tornadoes that ripped through the heart of the University of Iowa but i sure did...my brother's apartment was completely destroyed...his whole neighborhood was trashed. He was in the apartment (top floor of a 4 story building) when the window blew out and the power went out, he grabbed his dog and bolted for the door and turned in time to see the ceiling ripped off the top of his apartment!!

...luckily he made it out unhurt with his pup, guitars and car intact...the cars to either side of his were completely destroyed. He's on his way home now and for those of you attending the Pre-Backpacking dinner you'll hear all about it first hand

My bro snapped a bunch of pics himself around his neighborhood...supposed to be insane.

Argh..I'll check with Conner next time I see him on IM. He's out there attending school. That sucks, I'm sure several apartment buildings were hit like that.

Oh, and the pics aren't linked right.

Glad your bro is okay. I have heard that April is the biggest month for tornados, especially with all of the funky weather the US is having, this definitely won't be the end of it. I mean, its 80 damn degrees in April in Chicago, does this mean it will be 115 in July .

Yeah, I actually go to school at U of Iowa right now it was a pretty intense night. The town is pretty beat up. I took about 30 pictures last night(and another 60 or so this morning), but walked out to a different part of town today and it's just chaos. Cars are flipped over and just flattened and stuff and houses/apartment buildings are pretty ripped open.

Haven't heard anything about casualties or anything, hope there aren't, but based on the damage that would be pretty fortunate.

It's too bad too because it's a really nice looking college campus for a big university. If I post up my pictures I'll leave the link.

Yeah, Muscatine and Iowa definitely was near a lot of the damage. Washington St, Iowa Ave are two of the main streets that got damaged pretty badly. I'm on the other side of town on S. Van Buren and Bowery ... and this end of campus where there are lot of small apartment buildings and houses closer together (moreso than on Iowa Ave, which is mostly houses which at least have basements) really didn't get damaged that badly. Pretty lucky, because if this side got hit it would have been a huge mess.

I was pumped to go outside and see my bike still standing and my car relatively undamaged from our golf ball sized hail.

Who cares about a few houses and a McDonalds... Are all my bars okay?!

(seriously though, those pics were tough to look at. I used to live off Iowa Av in a house that swayed in a stiff breeze. I'm pretty sure that house is no more) Sad.

I live 3-4 blocks from Riverside Drive. The extent of my damage was a dead limb in my driveway. I was out and about last night and got to see a lot of the damage immediately after it happened. The Honda (car) dealership in town got hit hard. The front wall of the dealership collapsed and they had cars flipped onto their roofs.

My girlfriend is an ER nurse. They had alot of patients in with lacerations from broken windows and blowing debris, but few with serious injuries. There was only one fatality as a result of the storm. It occurred in a small town about 25 miles southeast of IC.

The fatality was in a house trailer when it was ripped from its' foundation and tumbled.

I was having dinner with a friend in Marion... the restaurant manager asked all the patrons to move into the kitchen area because the tornado sirens were going off in Cedar Rapids. Had some quarter-sized hail and heavy rain but that was about it.
