CTS-V or STS ???

OHHHH YEAHHH!! It's time for a new car. Fuckin Tits!!!! I'm so psyched.

I'm looking at the 2005 Cadillac CTS-V or the 2005 Cadillac STS.

Not sure if the CTS-V is practical as a daily driver. Any Caddy owners who want to chime in here, feel free.

STS is definitely style, but I know some ex-VR4 owners that jumped ship to the CTS-V and love them.

Any complains from these guys about the CTS-V as a daily commuter?

A guy I know drives one everyday down in Texas and he loves it. His makes 400 to the wheels though so his durability is not really something to judge the stock car by. The rear diffs are week as are the axles, but he races it.

CTS...it's got the 350 GM V8 with a 6 spd manual. That engine is incredibly strong and been for what...40 years? It's one of the rare GM reliable engines (along with the 3.8L V6). On top of that the car looks great.

Only thing I'd be sure to review/test out is how tough that clutch is to work. As a daily commuter, anything less than a great clutch would be a bitch during traffic.

The first year and the 06 model have different motors. The 05 has the old zO6 engine, the 06 has the LS2. If it means anything to ya, all the guys that were running the LS1 based zO6 motors in their racecars are now swapping to LS2s. If you plan to keep it stock, it won't matter at all.

Evidently, there are issues with the OEM tires only lasting 10k miles, the differential crapping out at 10k miles, and a small few have blown their motors after only 5K miles.

You can pick up a less than 1 year old version of most cts (maybe not the V) for a hell of a lot less than retail, the sts too. I saw an 05 sts for sale for 24k a month ago, the retail new on the car was around 50K. The Sts is sweet for a road / cruising car, but the cts v is an all around killer.

All the GM diffs are weak. Drive it relatively close to normal and you're fine. Most of them only pop on drag radials or stickier because of the shock from the manual when it's launched. If you don't plan on taking it to the track or beating the piss out of it everytime you get in, it won't be a problem. The motors blowing up is news to me. They are bulletproof unless you do the mechanical over rev downshift. Once in a while people screw up and shift 1-2 and back to 1 when they miss 3rd at wot. It busts up the pushrods, but it's no huge deal. It rarely ever bends a valve. It's covered under warranty as long as you don't tell the dealer what you did anyway. Go to LS1tech.com if you want some more opinions, they have a CTS-V forum. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=68 enough info to keep you busy for days. From what I know, most people that buy them are extremely happy with what they get.

I test drove the CTS-V. Great car! I've heard the same thing about the tires though. The 05's came with softer compound tire, don't remember the make/model. The clutch was as good as anything else i drove, including my current ride a G35, and I can't complain about it even in traffic.

One thing to look into is if it still has that weird skip shift thing. Under certain conditions it would force you to shift 1-4 or something goofy like that. If it does, I've been told its an easy 30min/$20 mod to fix.

What about winter driving. Is a car with 400 ponies and rear wheel drive completely useless on snow cevered roads? Or is it just slow going?
