i wanna buy a Ipod tomorrow, help me pick one.

well my wife bought my a harmony 800 remote for my b-day. BUT its really a POS. so i have 270.00 in credit at best buy.

i wanna buy a Ipod, i wanna stay around 300.00

which one should i get?

here is some help, i dont care about videos, and i dont care about pictures.

i am gonna mainly use it for my bike and car, and i think there is a docking station that allows me to use a optical out to my stereo to listen threw that? "IS THIS TRUE"? i sure hope so.

so my question is, which one should i buy? help me get the best one for around 300.00 thanks.

If you really want an Ipod get 4Gb nano (249$).
Stylish, super small, will fit everywhere, up to 12 Hours of constant play.
Color screen, screen-lock, stopwatch, calendar, notes, games, alarm, contacts an photos.
I know you said you don't care about pictures, but this is a extra stuff in it.
Only thing I hate - scratches really easy, but I got a cover with belt holder from Iskin, and problem solved. Great for a bike and workout.

yeah i dont know which to go, i did a little research on best buy.

250.00 for the 4g nano FLASHDRIVE

300.00 for a 30g HardDrive

to me the 30g does a whole LOT more for an extra 50 bucks, not to mention the space.

mind you, i dont plan to store my complete Cd collection on just this thing. i plan to load what i want when i want to change the music out and so on.

also i dont know if the flash drive might be a better unit then the harddrive when it comes to bumps and what not "will a HD skip? will a flash drive skip"???

i dunno.

30g is alot, but i am not some nerdy type of guy that will be dancing on a train watching downloaded videos or someshit.

i am just gonna use it for storing music i want to listen to on the run, ya know.

ALSO but this is another main concern of mine. do they have a docking station with a optical output so i can plug it into my receiver/preamp.
and IF they do...will it do it with any unit? or do i have to get a flashdrive one or a HD one?

thanks for the help.

I have both a nano and and 30 gig... They are both very nice. But the 30 gigs comes in handy very often.... If you are using it on your bike and car go with the 30 gig, or buck up and go a full 60 gigs. If you want to work out with it, run, walk etc go with a nano.

But they are coming out with a new design next year that will blow this one away.. It will have an enourmous touch screen with all kinds of features...

I don't know about the optical output because I don't have the docking station, but if you can get a station with either IPOD, I would suggest you get the nano. It seems more geared to what you want to do. As for the HD or the Flash skipping, the Flash Nano will never skip, the HD technology will just about never skip too, it uses a buffering system to prevent skipping, so neither will give you a problem there. I suggest the Nano becasue you said you have no problem swapping your music out often and you aren't trying to put all of your music on it.

the nano is a flash drive which makes it less likely to fail from an impact. That being said I would go with the 30G if I were you. I have bigger fingers and the nano is a PITA to operate and I wouldn't want to try with riding gloves on. Battery life would be another issue I would look into. I'm not sure which one has longer life, although I would assume the Nano because of no moving parts.

no digital? they better get on that fast as i am sure i am not the only one with this request.

on a side note. i might just get the 4g nano.

but i think i read somewhere they have a 5g nano out?

ALSO monster231....you think i should buy 1 now? its only 250.00 or will the 2007 new model be worth waiting over a year for?

i am kinda new to all of this, so far all i know is ive been ripping c.d's into my itunes software that came with my computer, which also list my music in windows media player. all in MP3 format NOT MP4 format which only allows me to use ipod.

since i did everything in MP3 i am good i believe.

plus i like the ipod looks and what not. it seems leading edge tech for whats going on in the market.

Okay, first off why is the Harmony a POS? My Harmony 688 is like the coolest thing I ever bought for my home entertainment center! The programmed tasks fucking rock.

Anyways, forget the Nano; for just $50 more you can get the new 5G iPod Video 30GB (in black=sexy). Longer battery life, 5x the storage space, excellent color screen, and it's barely larger than the Nano.

Circuit City has it right now for $282.94:

Just get Best Buy to match it and you'll have it for $300 with tax.

Guys, he has a $270 credit at Best Buy. (Besides, Amazon is $282 with free shipping.)

Ken, BB will match CC's price, but they will not match amazon or other online vendors. Also, if you're already using iTunes for your library, then you're set for an iPod.

If you have more than 30GB of music, just create a new playlist (called something like My iPOD) and just add the music you want to that list. Then configure your new iPod to automatically synchronize with that playlist. It's a snap.

My bad....Shad is right, they will not price match on-line vendors and I forgot about the credit.

Shad could you clarify the gotchas about transfering music files accross multiple PC's with iTunes so Ken is aware; I am fuzzy on the details.
Also, Ken you may want to consider something other than Apple. I have a personal gripe w/ them so I stay away from their products and as such I am not the expert on iTunes. However I do know that you will not get a power supply w/ it (total if you ask me). If you want one from Apple, they will charge another 30 bones. The only way you will be able to charge the iPod out of the box is via the USB cable that comes with it. There are cheaper alternatives for about ten to twelve bucks : LINK

And you'll need an FM modulator for listening to it in the car. I'd shop someplace other than Best Buy for that. They have the Monster brand ones, and that's it. While fairly nice, they are VERY expensive ($80 I think) and not programable, you have a choice of 8 preset FM stations. The ones at other department stores are half that price. I have the monster one and around Chicago sometimes it doesn't come in clear because all 8 presets are taken.

As for the 'other' brands, the only one I'd consider is the Creative Zen series. Competitive price wise, some play vids, and has built in planner/voice recorder.

But, I do love it. I went with the Ipod because the display is big. that helps in the car. Also, the online reviews had quite a few people mention that the Creative Zens aren't as hearty. This was confirmed when I stopped in Best Buy and all 4 of Zen micros were not working. Granted, store display models get the piss beat out of them, but anything I use definately will as well.

you've already compressed the shit out of the original digital file, using an optical output vs. an analog rca one will have almost no effect on sound quality since it's already been compromised.

And this is why I'm going with a new 5G iPod. Fuck Creative.

My Zen Xtra (30GB, barely 2 years old) is a paperweight now becuase of their horrible firmware, useless firmware updating tool, and horrible customer service. I'm not giving any more of my $$ to that company.

As far as trasnferring files, you need a third-party tool (there are freeware/sharewware ones out there) to pull music OFF an iPod onto a seperate computer. iTunes does not do this navitly, almost certain because of potential licensing/piracy issues.

Digital Rights Management, commonly referred to as DRM is designed to make it difficult for you to transfer music files across multiple PCs. How does the software know the difference between your 2 personal PCs and your buddy in Belgium that you just sent your entire library to? You need to authorize the PC with your iTunes password in order to play DRM encoded files. What a pain in the ass. This is why my entire library is in mp3 format. Call me old school I guess.
