Music Download???

Napster is shut down. Kazaa is now a pay site.

If I wanted to warn my kids about illegal sites to download music (and how they should avoid them), what would they be?

Thanks in advance.

I've reprimanded my kids from using Kazaa just yesterday, but they never said they had to pay for the downloads they pulled like tunes from a great east coast band called Dispatch.

I downloaded Kazaa V2. Seems to work okay... not sure why I thought it had turned into a pay site. Lots more pop-ups than I remembered...

I'm poor

I'm poor and don't like buying CDs just for one song. If I like the album I'll pick up the CD. I got Coldplay's new one... the new Wilco disc... new Johnny Cash... but I'm not gonna pay $18 so that nelly can put another diamond in his teeth and I get the one hip hop song I want

Then carjack a benz sell it on the black market and buy all the cd's you want.

Don't get mad at people cause they have something that people want and can make money with it. It's the theory America was built on I wonder if Nelly would say he wouldn't buy your product (hypothetically) cause he doesn't want to support you to buy another Duc

Good point

Maybe you mistook me for someone trying to defend the free download of music... because I'm not trying to ... just because I do it doesn't mean it's wrong.

I'm not mad at nelly because he's rich... I was just making a joke! ... I guess humor and sarcasm doesn't get conveyed very well through smileys . I understand that america was built on 'the dream' that you have a skill or item that someone else wants and can make money off it. I'm not going to start a debate about whether music downloading is wrong because technically it kind of is stealing... just wanted to clear my statement up

PS there will be no carjacking

Morpheus is no good. If you get Kazaa, please use Ad Aware to rid your comp of all the spyware it installs on your comp. Or simply avoid spyware and use kazaalite. It's the exact same thing as kazaa, but with out the spyware.

Pahhh Leeezee....

Don't anyone starts throwing stones... or you better check that aftermarket exhaust because I think that it is illegal to run on the street and you'd better not ever, ever exceed the posted speed limit - else you'll be branded a car jacker. c'mon lighten up.

F.Y.I. In general I never download music that I would otherwise buy. The quality and volume varies so much with every download that I can't image listening to a whole CD that way. Believe me I contribute my share to the music industry. When I want to find something its nice to have the Internet as a resource. IS it 100% legal, NO, but somehow I still manage to sleep at night.

Thanks for the help everybody...

Look....I'm not trying to get into a debate about this, I was more having fun with Stydie. I hardly think an aftermarket exhaust and speeding has the same implications. I'm talking about capitalism and preserving our rights to create a product and make money off it. Not laws that were created for what the government thinks is our safety and conveinience. I just don't think it's right so I won't download. It's not illegal to download yet, that I know of, so do it if you feel ok about.

hehehehe you know it!!

Yeah the carjacking reference was kinda off-kilter... but so was the reference to aftermarket exhausts and speeding. I think crazy is trying to make the point that downloading music electronically can be though of as 'stealing' in some people's minds... hence the endless lawsuits and whatnot. I don't think a court's going to be able to come up with one 'right' decision... it's something we have to decide about for ourselves really...

Another similar thread about hacking to get free service (theft of service) was recently deleted to prevent any implication that this web site was involved. This one is borderline too!

Nobody can control what you do privately, but I can assure you that many musicians who try to make a living selling music might feel differently about it. Likening the theft of music material (copyright violation) to the use of an aftermarket exhaust that was legally purchased is a bit of a stretch, unless your moral compass isn't pointing north.

Ripping CD to MP3s that you have purchased falls under "fair use". Downloading free copyrighted material is perhaps debatable in the amount of damage done, but it IS theft.

Using this web site to exchange information on how to obtain copyrighted material could potentially involve the site in conspiracy charges if BMI or ASCAP decided to set an example (something they do periodically).

And before someone chimes in that the site is not liable, I would say that since we have moderators who edit or delete posts based upon some criteria, the fact that this thread exists rather than be deleted is a implicit approval of the content.

Since one of the site owners in involved in this discussion, I'll leave it to the owners discretion. My choice would be to lock or delete this thread.

Basically I would agree with your point Dave, but.... the sites that have been mentioned or posted do more than just allow you to "Steal" music. They also facilitate the transfer of files between people. As such they are a pretty good tool. However, we all know that tools and other things can be used for somewhat questionable purposes. Just because this particular tool alows people to get the music, doesn't mean people need to use it for that purpose. This can really be argued forever and ultimately, however, in the end the sofware companies will probably have to back down ie Napster.

This is really a stupid discussion, but I don't have anything else to do so here goes...

My (lost) point was this: being "moral" means conforming to the standards of right and wrong (black and white). If you knowingly speed or use an aftermarket part you know is illegal, you have committed a wrong. Stretch or not. You can spend a life time debating the shades of wrongness and who it effects. I just didn't like the judgemental tone of the response about downloading music. My point was that we are all sinners and we shouldn't be so judgemental of others sins. Especially something so stupid as all this.

As far as the legality of the thread, that's up to someone else. All this seems rather silly to me...

As far as I'm concerned I found out what I need, I'm retreating into my den of theives whilst I wait for that Big Brother knock on the door (I just hope I can hear it with all that loud music playing).

Case closed. Let it die.

I just wanted to mention that if you go the IRC route, as someone mentioned, there are numerous group that rip full CDs in good quality, non-volume-varying fashion. Uh, so not only do you not have to piece together full CDs song by song, but you're not left with the pieced together feel from track to track when you're listening to the CD.

Judgemental??? Did someone say you're going to hell? Did someone report you? Is it not ok for someone to speak out if they think you're doing something wrong?

What makes this "so stupid"? How much are you allowed to steal and from who before it is no longer stupid?

By the way, stealing is a CRIME, speeding is a violation. Even the legal system recognizes the difference.

whats the difference between this and borrowing your buddies tape and dubbing it yourself at home back in the days. Or remember when you sat by the radio waiting for your song to come on and hit the record button?(ok some of you are to young for this but it did happen!)same thing can be said for cd's you can now dub cd's. these devices are provided to you buy the same people who make the records(do they even make records anymore???). My point is this has been going on since the beginning, its just on a larger easier scale now! do i think its right? yes and no, i see more money going into the pockets of corprate america and less into the hands of the artist and that i think is wrong.
