How to deal with a potential thief?

OK, here is the deal with out going into too much detail.

My car gets broken into and the only thing stolen is a radar detector. Been watching ebay and Craig's list closely for the possible thief to make a mistake and put it up for sale too soon and then I'd start asking questions.

I find a seller with-in a 20 mile radius of my zip selling a radar same make and model as mine a week 1/2 later. Item description is :NEW but the picture is out of the box so I ask the following questions: 1) Is the item really "New" 2) Do you have the box and manuals 3) Where are you located I'd like to possible do a local pick up and I get the following response:

Seller : "i dont have the box i throw it out like 6 weeks ago i dont wanna meet cause i am working so i have no time "

I then ask for the serial number to verify the remaining warranty:

Seller "i had it like 2 months sorry but i didnt buy the warranty"

Then I ask again for the serial number just so I don't get scammed kind of way and I get this:

Seller "this item is got no serial number the guy before me took it out"

So, at first he didn't so call "Buy the warranty" and now last thing says the "guy before me took it out"

It is possible it isn't mine but I would bet any amount of money it is STOLEN.

Right now I have his name and address thanks to my computer skills

hmmmmm... what should I do??? I know the cops won't do anything.

Do you know the serial # on your RD?

You can absolutely include the cops in this.

Get a whole bunch of your friends together and pile into a van, set up a place to meet the guy and if it is your Radar Detector. A nice way to say it is Apprehend the guy.

You probably freaked him out asking for the serial number, you shouldn't have done that.

That Idea sounds a lot better, after you get your radar detector back

Oh god, it would be fun to sit at the end of the street on our bikes and watch the cops bomb rush the house.

That's crazy! First off, good job on the detective skills! I would honestly just show up to his place with a video camera and tell his bitch ass that you've got him on tape stealing your radar. See what he says, usually they'll fall apart and admit it, if not, just scare him a bit and say you'll be giving the popo the tape.

I guess the only issue I have is if he did take the serial number off the unit I can't prove anything. I hate people who steal shit and especially right out of my own driveway... once again this guy might not have mine but by his responses he does have someones stolen radar... who takes the serial number off a $300 radar?

Call the manufacturer and ask if the serial number is anywhere else like inside the unit. guarantee this genius didn't cover his tracks that well. then take that and the email string over to the police station, have them call the guy and say they woudl like to buy it,, bam they go pick up your radar and this jerk off.

Create a fresh ebay account, or better yet have friend bid on it too, but ask less intrusive questions about the unit. You might have spooked him, especially if he see's your home-town listed in your eBay profile, as he damn-well know's where you live.

I called the manufacture and they said the only place the serial number is located is on a sticker on the bottom of the unit.

I'm not worried bout spooking this guy... I already have all his info He isn't in my home town but somewhat local. I even have the guys phone number.

I'm just unsure how to handle this now that the serial number is only in one place and I'm sure this clown removed it. You guys want to come with me to his house 50 strong? That will put the fear of god into him.

Did you try calling the cops to let them know what you found? They might be interested in paying a visit. Probable cause and all that. They may even know of the scumbag. He may already have a rap sheet. Odds are if he has 1 hot item he has more and I doubt that he really removed the serial number, yet...
