Beware of spoof email from ebay

Last night I got an email that looked exactly like a question from a seller on one of my items that is listed for sale. When I clicked on the respond now button it looked just like the ebay login page, which I didn't think was out of the ordinary, but something didn't seem right. Which after closer inspection I found out that the email was a spoof it has two differences from a normal ebay question from a seller email. I had to go change my passwords on everything right away. I now will only reply to messages through my ebay account and not through email. Only legit messages from ebay or questions for sellers will show up in the your messages section on ebay. The email was from seller bestcustomer92.

Ya...nothing new. I was getting these emails much more frequently about 5 years ago. Thought that scam died down a bit, but guess not

there have been some good ones for paypal lately, the only reason i cought them was because of the illigitimate ip addresses used, other than that, the html was a really good fake. I go to them anyway, and enter shit like:

username: nicetry
password: azzhole

Yeah, I get a lot of emails from Suntrust Bank asking for my banking info and pin # so they update my account accordingly, and I don't even have an account there Any emails like that I just delete, even if it was from my own bank.

On an unrelated note, I'm going to be a millionaire due to my very generous Nigerian business partner.

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

On my personal home pc (which only I use), I have firefox set to store the passwords to most common sites I visit.

Occasionally I'll click on one of these emails just to see what the page looks like. A quick give away that it's a fake is the fact that my login/pw DO NOT show up prepopulated in the fields. FF only does that on the genuine pages.

Not something to truely rely on, but something to keep in mind. I don't recall if IE links it similarly or not.

This works great until poisoned DNS attacks make it big, and you're URL looks RIGHT, but you're still at a trojan site... and thank you for your login credentials.

Very simple way to avoid it no matter how legit the emails are. If a site like Ebay or Paypal contacts you and you feel weary about it no matter what. Simply open your browser and type in ebay.com. Simple, you don't have to click on the link in the email.

To my knowledge, legit email from either of ebay or PP will address you by your real name not screen name or ebay id. I am always amused to get questions from buyers when I have no listings. I don't know if it helps or not, but, I always forward this shit to spoof @ ebay or paypal. Then hit delete
