I'm a cheaper tipper when it comes to bartenders than waiters I gotta admit. But only when it's something that's on tap or bottled. Oooh, you grabbed a bottle outta the fridge and popped the cap off in a cool way lemme give you an extra $2 for that! No, if I order 4 beers and you pop open 4 bottles...you'll get a $1 tip. Now if I get a vodka tonic and I watch you pour heavy...you get a much nicer tip. I think the bartender tips should go by what the drink is...not the dollar amount

I used to bartend and I know that when people tipped me and were nice I would look for them and get them their drinks first even if other people were there waiting.
Now, even if its just a beer, I'll tip a buck or two depending on the place.

And its usually the other way around, if you tip well, the bartender will remember and pour your drink a little heavy next time.

Exactly. Im not saying you have to tip good when I open 4 bottles of beer but I also dont HAVE to come back to you very quickly either. I also dont have to buy you a round or over pour any either. Tipping is completely optional. I can tell ya this. I have no problem ignoring people that tip shitty though..

Well that is what they are there for... tips mostly....
I tip everytime I go up to the bar ( mostly just $1 here or there, unless they give me a few drinks free then i'll give a lil more ), and yes I watch them as well as they pour the drink The more the merrier!

Exactly. Our minimum wage is $3.90 an hour. We only make money if people are good to us. But the rule of thumb is, "Be good to us and we will be good to you." It has to work that way in our job. The first one is how the boss wants it. After that its up to you if we change things... After doing this job I wont leave a server/bartender anything less than 20% no matter how shitty the service..

TIPS

To Insure Prompt Service

If you are hanging in a bar..... first round.... go big on the tip.

A decent bartender will take good care of you the rest of the night.
If they do.... reward them again. If they are a jerk you can stiff them
later and it all evens out.

Grease the skids baby......

Ok, so at approx $4 an hour, even if you sell only 10 drinks in an hour and assume a $1 tip off of each, that pay is not bad. I know bartenders realistically make more than that...balance that out with your closing and opening duties and it's not bad pay.

As for tipping well...I'm sure many others here as well watch the pour. I know a good and a bad pour and you'll be tipped appropriately. Also other things come into play like just putting a straw in the drink, asking if I want lime, etc...If I order a 2nd or 3rd time and you pour well AND recall that I want 2 olives in my drink, then you're at the top of my list and taking at least $3-$5 tip per drink in the order.

I agree with both you and blarny. Tip big first and you'll be taken care of. At a busy bar your thought about how pay is isnt bad. At slow ones it doesnt work that way but thats my fault for the shitty place I'm at...
