Illinois license plate question

I'm in the process of moving to Illinois, and was wondering what the policy is regarding license plates (on cars). Specifically, does Illinois require you to mount a license plate on the front bumper?

One of our cars has never had a plate mounted up front, so I'd hate to have to screw it up. I've seen pictures of Illinois cars on the web, and some appear to have a plate up front, while others don't. Is it sort of one of those things that they prefer, but don't enforce?

by law yes, but they usually don't mess with you unless they need a reason to pull you over. I've never had a front plate because I bought my car in Florida. I was pulled over once because I had tint all the way around and no front plate, but they just gave me a warning.

Yes, you need a front plate, but I have two cars, no front plates, never been pulled over for it. HOWEVER, I do know that can be used a probable cause to pull me over anytime...

I've never had a front plate either. I've been ticketed for it but only when I was parking illegally downtown. I just sent the city of a picture of my plate on my car and said that I have fixed the issue. Didn't pay the fine and I never herd back from them. I had to do it twice. They way I did the picture was use some tape on the back of the plate. Put in the nose of the car, take the picture then remove the plate.

You never know. If your nice you might be able to get them to trade you a no front plate ticket for a speeding ticket. That way they still give you a ticket, but its not a moving violation (at least I don't think it is - either way you know what I mean). Of course if your a jerk they will give you both.

I havent had a front plate on my 88 560SL for years, and have never been pulled over for it, but I am also an OLD guy, and I dont drive the car that often. If they profile you (race, age, your car) it will be a reason for them to pull you over because it is law, but you can take your chances without it too.

By law you need a front plate. I think it depends on the town, and what type of car you own. I see all types of high end cars (BMW's, MB's, Audi's, and the likes) with no front plates. I've been issued a ticket for no front plate while my car was parked in my driveway, and this is in Skokie. (Not my Audi but my old Honda) i'd just put one on just to refrain from being hassled by The Man.

There is an amendment someone is tryign to push through the state legislature that is supposedly going to make it legal for corvettes to not have front plates. I laughed when I stumbled across that little piece of legislation. How much you want a bet the writer drives a vette?

Oh and I've been ticket for this numerous times. I used to just take a pic of the car with the front plate on to court and the ticket was dismissed. same with the tinted windows I had. I took a pic of the car with the windows rolled down and took that to court, ticket dismissed.

Wait you think someone in the city actually looked at the picture and said "okay let him go"

No chance they just filed it away.
I would go to https://parkingtickets.cityofchicago...terTickets.jsp and see if these tickets are still on your plate.

That is completely ate up. So the guy who owns a $100K Porsche 911 has to drill his bumper while the guy in the $50K Corvette doesn't.

I wonder how long I could get away with keeping a Texas plate on the thing.

You'll get pulled over for everything with an out of state plate. They figure you'll never come back to go to court, so it's free $$$.

Welcome to IL, you will find laws, politics and reality rarely go hand in hand here. Corruption and self serving is rampant. the Feds are constantly investigating our state officials.

In all fairness, this quote should be printed on a big sign at the state line.

Between my new neighbors asking what church I attend, the five FM radio stations all playing the Starland Vocal Band, the DNA test required to get a driver's license, paying $80 in sales tax on a 16 year old car in order to get license plates, and no beer in the grocery stores... I'm starting to wonder what the heck I got myself into.

It must be a local thing. I know up around Charleston (where my in-laws live), you can find beer in grocery stores. Not down in Egypt, however.

Yep. It makes so much sense to sell beer only at gas stations! They do that in the south as well. You can't buy beer at a liquor store or a grocery store. You have to go to the gas station.

I have my car for almost two years now and I got pulled over for missing the current license plate sticker (which I had in my car but forgot to slap on my license plate), they couldn't give me a ticket for not having sticker so they gave me the ticket for not having a front plate. It was a one time deal and cost me only $20, court appearance was not needed. I still don't have my plate on the front.

Similar issues up in WI. A bunch of certain GM models have the plastic covers for states that dont require front plates (Vette owners are teh worse offenders). Same thing goes on in WI. Just toss it back on, show a cop (cant send a picture. Has to be visually inspected) and its tore up.

Until the state(s) changes to 1 plate, you better have both on. They could just start hiking up the fines for everytime you get caught without it.

I only use grocery stores where they have a walk-in beer cooler. It's like a holy site to me.....

BTW - I received tickets for no front plate and tinted windows only twice from the same officer a few months apart! He threatens me with a court appearance ticket if he catches me again. Somehow I am not intimidated but I did put a front plate on with some zip ties just to save time....

Yep... although the guy with the corvette can just pop out the little nameplate in the front bumper for the mounting point

That may be true for the C5 Corvette, but I don't think the C6 comes with that pop-out part.
