Cicadas?

I know this has been talked about quite a bit and people expect this year to be the 17 yr cycle that the cicadas come back. is that still true? and if so when are they expected and for how long? 2 weeks? month?

i am starting to wonder if it is in fact supposed to be this year.

All you ever wanted to know about Cicadas

From the site:
No brood is listed on the chart above for 2006. Next year (2007), however, will see the reappearance of the large midwestern 17-year Brood XIII, which is found in eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, and along the southern edge of Late Michigan into Indiana and (apparently) Michigan. Dense populations of this brood continue to thrive in farm-edge woods along rivers as well as in suburban Chicago backyards and forest preserves. As is true for most of the 17-year broods, all three 17-year species will be present, although Magicicada septendecula is absent in the northernmost populations of the brood.

the one advantage to living in plainfield where we have NO trees.

I remeber growing up in Lagrange and western springs when these came out last time. the streets were littered with them.

May not be that many trees, but you've got the mighty Dupage river, and theres going to be tons of cicadas along it.

I was working at exmoor country club the last time they came through. One of my responsibilities was to sweep up the remains in front of the men's locker room. Boy that job sucked.
That was 1990 so they should be back next year.

God, I remember riding my CBR600 up Sheridan Road towards Lake Forest 17 years ago and back then, I NEVER wore a helmet. After that ride, I started wearing my helmet until these HUGE bastids finally died off. Do you know how much a cicada weighs when it hits your forehead at 65mph? ouch!

Hopefully I won't see too many next year. Last time they were around I lived in Lake Bluff (tons of trees) - now I live in Round Lake in a newer subdivision. It used to be farm land I'm pretty sure and I notice because of the lack of trees how you can hear stuff from all over. Another thing that's nice is that there are no leaves to rake....score!

I friggin hate bugs - especially those big bastards.

Oh sheeeet... I just realized my office was pretty much built inside a forest (deer have been known to come right up to the windows).

I don't really hear them around here but they are so loud up in lincolnwood by my fiancee.
