Any car mechanics on board???

I am having a problem with my van. I replaced the battery about 3 weeks ago cuz I left the lights on and drained it dead. Well I let my brother have the van and he has been driving it for 3 weeks now. He called me up last night to tell me it would not start. I went there today and tried to jump it but no dice. All I got was a click click and that was it. I took the battery to the auto parts store and it check out ok. What is my next step. One that that I did was when I had the battery connected I turned on the lights and the came on like they should. Another thing is and maybe this might be the problem but I don't know is the terminals that connect to the battery are not very tight i actually took the off the battery without a wrench and moved them back and forth a couple of times to get the battery out of the van. Could the loose connecting that I have cause the van to not start even if I have juice to light the lights??? BTW if anyone is still interested in the van I will sell it for $1000. My brother has already racked up 3 parking tickets in 3 weeks.

The bad terminal connetion could possibly do that, so could a bad wire to the battery. But if it was going Click click click that means you dont have enough juice. Something may be draining your battery. Have you installed a stereo or anything recently? Check around, to make sure you are not leaving any lights on or anything plugged into the cig lighter. Check to see if you have any blown fuses as well, it may give you a good place to track it down. Finally It may be your alternator is not charging the battery. When they test your battery they usually test to see how well a current flows through it under load. They dont check to see if it has been charged. You can take your alternator out and have it tested as well. I think pepboys or any major parts store will do it for you.

I'd start with the alternator, but you need to take it off to get it tested. Check the voltage on the battery. If it takes a charge and you can get it started, it should be around 14V when the van is running. If it's around 12V, the alternator isn't charging the system, in effect all the electric stuff is running off the battery.

bad terminal possibly, if the wiring is good, and it just clicked, needs a starter.

loose connections sure could do it.
if its a ford (I forgot) the starter solenoid is separate from the starter and you can know more by jumping that out (gm's piggyback the solenoid on the starter)

if you suspect a bad cable you can run jumper cables along the same path for temporary troubleshooting purposes.

I'd start with cleaning the terminials and making sure the connections were tight before spending any money.

Loose connection could surely do it.

The solenoid would be my second vote.
With the Ignition on.... jump the big battery connector to the big cable that goes to
the starter with an INSULATED pair of pliers or something. If that starts
it ...... it's the solenoid.... if not it's the starter.

uhm...it could be the starter also like the guys said, but i dont see what model it is...

if its a chevy...crawl up under it and hit the starter FIRMLY (but not massively) with a hammer about 5 times...believe it or not, sometimes the connections loose contact and with chevy starters, that can do a temp fix to it to get you out of where u are at...tricks of the trade..

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

Way to check the Alternator is to undo the positive from the battery after running and see if the car dies

ok, 95% it is your connections. make sure the battery terminals are clean (should be, it is a new battery...) and the actual cables are clean too. attach them and make sure they are tight and dont wiggle.
You can have a basic connection and turn the lights on and all that will work fine even if the connections are loose but you will not get the starter to crank. the starter takes ALOT of amps to get it to turn over and a loose connection to the battery or ground will not allow enough current to flow to get the starter to crank over. all you will get is enough to trip the selenoid (the click, click, click...). A loose connection at the battery will also prevent the alternator from properly charging it (giving the false idea that you have a bad alternator).
also check your ground, disconnect that at the chassis, clean it and re-attach it. just follow the ground wire from the battery to where it connects to the frame.
I almost guarantee that this will solve your problem.
