Why not there?

So I'm talking to a buddy of mine about my track day, and he asks if there are many black people out there.
(I know, I wrote black, so this is now a 'Race' thread instead of a Race thread.)

Anyhoo, I told him that I hadn't really noticed a lot of black people, but I haven't really been looking for them (us) either.
I've only been to BHF, AB, and recently, Putnam. That was only my 11th track day, though, so I'm certainly not an expert on track day demographics.
Truthfully though, I don't recall seeing more than a smattering of black folk.

Any thoughts on why this is? I for one was stumped, so I let my first response stand.

I does seem like ya'll are under represented but NESBA folks make anyone, black, white, yellow green, red (neck) who shows up welcome.

So tell them to come out and try it!

I dont think its a "race" thread-its just an observation.

Cant help you with the "why", but obviously as you have witnessed first hand since youre participating in track days nobody gives you a second look at the track its all about the fun and comradery regardless of skin color.

Would have to say that Blacks are under-represented in racing in general.

Not many in Automotive sport either...... http://www.willytribbs.com/
represented for years.

Guess we shouldn't tell Ricky Gadson either.

I guess it depends on where you ride, as well. I know that there is a huge NESBA contingent that is black out of the DC area. They ride together at various events, and I rode with them last year at Road Atlanta. They were a tight knit group, and they were some of the funniest guys at the track. We pitted with them and had a blast.

I wonder if some of the black CRs might have a better understanding of the demographics. I know that Ron and I were at the Suzuki dealer one day, and there were some black guys with some sort of riding club (all had matching leather jackets). We talked to them about coming to the track and they said that all of their friends go to the drag strip... anyhow, the ratios definitely don't seem to represent the same ratios of the general populus.

As Blarney, said, under represented in racing in general. It's time for a membership drive! LOL!

'That kid' is James "bubba" Stewart. And yeah, he's pretty much still ruling it. Carmichael is 'retiring' from some racing before Stewart gets up to full speed. Kind of pissed because that is something I would love to see live. There probably has been some demographic effects since James has started to get popular, but I don't have any stats to prove it.

My guess? More black riders are in the city instead of suburbs, and it's easier to get pulled into the whole slammed Busa thing when you are riding around on city streets where a lot of posers like to ride. And that naturally leads to more drag racing than road racing (Pinks anyone?)

Obviously, this is a completely uneducated opinion based on stereotypes

Damn right, we're taking over everything . You will catch me on the mountain snowboarding this winter. Hopefully there will be at least two black people on the track next year , I am really going to try hard to get on the track this next season. My guess for the low numbers is the cost. This is why there aren't many black people in golf, baseball, and motorsports.

Black people make up around 11% of the U.S. population. So if the track day has a close representation, only 1 rider out of 10 will be black. And then in some areas the black population is far less or far more than 10%.

You've just been going to the wrong days. I don't think NESBA is representative of the track day community as a whole. You'll find a lot more diversity with the other orgs. Different people are attracted to different orgs. I've ridden with all 3 of the major ones in the Chicago area and thats just what I've observed. Each one has its own distinct culture/atmosphere which seems to appeal to different deomgraphics.

Hopefully three! My guess is the cost associated & lack of info. I'd been riding a couple years b4 I heard of track days. Didn't learn of them till I joined this site.

Most people I know that ride aren't knowledgeable & tend to gravitate towards what they see in the motorcycle community. Blinged out bikes & stunters. Its another aspect of the diverse motorcycling community. Not that there's anything wrong with that but I prefer to improve on my skills on the track.
